It was another slow day at the bookstore. Malakai had just finished sorting the non-fiction section for the fourth time. Malakai loved his family's bookstore. As a kid he would help his dad organize the books and finish his homework at one of the rustic tables in the back corner of the store. These days, Malakai spends his time rereading books, from open to close. Shadow Hills is a town populated by mostly the supernatural. Which meant not a lot of people came in to get a copy of Moby Dick. Sometimes, a few people would come in for literature on the paranormal. However, Malakai liked the peace and quiet. Interacting with others was not something he enjoyed. He prefers reading To Kill a Mockingbird behind his desk while drinking a cup of black coffee.
He took a sip of the hot drink and immediately felt relaxed. Although, it wasn't quite as bitter as he liked.
He raised his hand and swayed it from left to right, "Hoc perfecta capulus." He brought the mug to his lips and took a sip. 'Ah perfection' he thought. Being a witch has its perks. Although, it did mean being judged by every other supernatural species for simply existing, but at least the coffee is good.
Shadow Hills is mostly werewolves. Malakai knew this ever since his parents told him "Don't go into the woods by yourself. There are beasts that will hurt you." As he got older, he realized most werewolves are good people, as long as they never know his true identity. Revealing you are a witch is like a death wish in this town. Luckily, witches don't have a distinct scent. It just obviously isn't human. Typically, the werewolves assume he's one of the million other species in their world. Malakai didn't understand how the war between witches and werewolves began. All he wanted was for everyone to live in harmony, but that is just a dream.
Malakai had many dreams. He thought he would be an astronaut, then a race car driver, then a doctor, but he finally landed on his true passion. Being an author. How could he not fall in love with writing while growing up in a bookstore? He just wishes he could share his passion with his family. Sadly, that was just another dream.
The sound of the bells hanging from the door chimed through the store and broke Malakai's train of thought. Without even looking up he could feel their presence. His heart sped up and the blood in his veins ran piping hot. He knew exactly who it was.
His fated.
Every witch is 'fated' to be with someone. Their souls are intertwined with each other. One is not complete without the other. Most witches find their fated by eighteen but Malakai just turned twenty-five. He'd given up searching for his soul mate a few years ago.
He slowly stood up and peeled his eyes away from his book.
The sight in front of him left him breathless.
A tall woman with black hair, pale skin, and striking silver eyes stopped in her tracks. He knew right away that she was a werewolf. Her sculpted body and aura was a dead give away.
She was absolutely stunning. Power exuded off her in waves. She was clad in all black exercise attire, but remained the most breathtaking thing he'd ever seen.
He could tell that she knew they were 'mates' as the werewolves call it. The way she paused, her breathing quickened, and the shock written all over her face.
"MINE" she growled. Yep we're definitely mates.
The woman strode towards Malakai. He came out from behind his desk and met the she-wolf halfway.
Their eyes remained locked on each other, "I'm Diana." She spoke. Her voice is so melodic. Malakai's blue eyes remained on Diana's silver ones.
"M-Malakai." He offered his hand for her to shake.
"Really? We're freaking mates and you want to shake my hand?" Diana looked bewildered. It's not like Malakai didn't want to kiss her and show her exactly how perfect they were for each other. He just knew someone like her wouldn't want someone like him as her mate. As hard as it is to admit, he believed any moment now Diana would reject him. She was a goddess. Beauty and power dripped from her every pore. I don't belong with her.
"Listen Malakai, is it?" He nodded. "I never put any thought into finding my mate. I am Beta of White Mountain pack. You probably know who we are. I can tell you aren't human." She sighed. "I'm sorry its just...I really only focus on my job and they're is a lot going on in my pack right now. Mate drama is the last thing I need. I-I can't do this." Diana ran out of the store like she was on fire.
"Wait! Let's talk about this!" He followed her outside.
She shifted into her wolf mid air. The clothes around her tore to shreds.
A pure white wolf stood before him. He couldn't look away from her ethereal beauty. The she-wolf's white coat shined around her like a halo. He fell to his knees gawking at the goddess in front of him. All the oxygen escaped from his lungs. I need her.
The she-wolf let out a sorrowful whine then sprinted into the forest.
How could she just run away like that?
Doesn't she know we are meant to be?
Malakai laid on the ground. He ached all over. The bond has already formed. Every second away from Diana will be painful.
Black dots clouded his vision. The pain became too much to bear and he closed his eyes. Malakai drifted further and further away from consciousness.
"Diana." He whispered before he blacked out completely.
