Diana took her surroundings. She scanned the field in front of her scoping out any potential threats and coming up with an exit strategy. It was ingrained into her brain to evaluate her environment and at this point she didn't even realize when she did it.
"What is this place?" She asked the 'fairy' sitting next to her.
Malakai softly smiled, "This is my meadow. Well, not my meadow but I come her quite often." Malakai hadn't taken anyone here before. This was his place. He came to this meadow as a kid because it was walking distance from the bookstore.
Diana hopped out of the car and her mate quickly followed. The tall grass tickled her shins and the smell of the thick pine trees wafted up her nose. She breathed in deeply, inhaling the fresh forest air that she loved so much.
Malakai sat on the ground and hugged his long legs to his chest. Diana mimicked his position. The two mates sat quietly staring out into the open meadow. The soft sound of the river flowing close by lulled them both into relaxation.
"I see why you like it here." Diana spoke softly as to not disturb the peace that wrapped around them both snugly.
"Oh really?" Malakai smiled. He looked down amusedly at Diana and urged her to go on.
"It's peaceful and quiet. I feel like I can actually breathe. For the first time in a while I'm not thinking about anything else except being here." Diana looked over to her mate who was gazing intently at her. His face projected an emotion she couldn't quite decipher. Was it confusion? Admiration? Annoyance? It's not like Diana knew any better. Emotions are not a strength of her's.
"I've never taken anyone here before." Malakai looked out into the field. The sun was setting perfectly between two large pine trees. The sun's hues erupted into the sky creating a mosaic of colors. The glow made Malakai's skin look so soft and touchable to Diana. She held herself back from caressing his cheek and staring into those baby blues.
"Then why me?" Diana shifted uncomfortably. It was a dumb question. They're mates. Why wouldn't he bring her here?
Does he like me?
Does he trust me?
We only met this morning!
Despite only knowing each other for a few hours, the undeniable sense of comfort and curiosity welled inside them both.
"Because it seemed like you needed break after you're talk with the alpha and-" Malakai scratched the back of his neck, "-I would walk here anytime my dad was frustrated, angry, or irritating when I was a kid. And to this day, whenever I need some peace and quiet I'll come here. I just wanted to share that with you, I guess." Malakai smiled sheepishly. Did he reveal too much?
I'm gonna scare her away aren't I?
Who hangs out in a meadow? God, I'm such a weirdo.
"It's perfect." Diana's voice pulled him from his thoughts. She let her legs fall into the criss-cross position and inched closer to Malakai. "I really needed this. Thank you." She said with utmost honesty.
Malakai stared down into her hypnotizing silver eyes, "You're very welcome, Wolfie." Malakai gave a sneaky smirk.
Diana laughed the tiniest bit (which was quite a lot for her) and playfully punched his arm, "So tell me what is it like to be a fairy, Kai?" Diana questioned.
Kai's smile instantly fell.
How is he supposed to get out of this?
Luckily his extensive reading of assorted literature gave him just enough information to get by, "Um well, it's pretty cool. I have powers that connect to the elements: earth, fire, air, and water."
"No way! Show me something!" Diana's childlike wonder surprised even herself. Her silver eyes grew wide and she offered a smile as a cherry on top.
She already knows I can't say "no"to her, Malakia thought to himself.
"What's your favorite flower?" Kai asked.
"Well it's kind of odd...but a Middlemist's Red. It has only two known plants in the entire world. It was my mom's favorite. I've never seen one in person though."
"Hmm Middlemist Red? They've only grown in China and England, correct?" Malakai confirmed.
"Yeah." Diana smiled approvingly at her mate's knowledge on what seems to be everything.
"One like..." Malakai clasped his hands together, scrunched his brown in concentration, and muttered words under his breath, "...this?"
Diana gasped at the perfectly blooming Middlemist's Red cupped in Malakai's hands. She was a loss for words. Her whole life all her mom wanted was a Middlemist's Red and soon Diana did too. It was just a silly dream though because they're so rare. But lo in behold, the most beautiful flower in the world rested in her mate's hands.
"Wha- how what?" She couldn't speak. All she could do was stare astonishedly at her lovely mate and the glorious flower in his hands.
"Here," Malakai offered the flower to Diana and she ever so carefully grasped it. She took extra care of it, not wanting to ruin it.
She sniffed the bright red petals, "It smells amazing." She smiled wider than ever before.
Kai gazed adoringly at the beautiful woman holding the flower that took quite a bit of magic to get. Using that much magic exhausted him. Diana directed a stunning smile to him that made his heart speed up.
Worth it.
He could stay here forever. The soft light of the fading sun made Diana's eyes sparkle even more than usual and her smile caused a ball of happiness to explode in him. Even from where they were sitting he could feel the subtle tingles of the mate bond. He looked over to her, Diana's dark curtain of hair fell in her face while looking down at the flower in her lap. Almost like a reflex Malakai tucked the ebony strands behind her ear. She lifted her head and they both stared into each other's eyes deeply. Malakai shifted his gaze to Diana's soft lips.
She closed the distance between them until they were centimeters apart. Diana closed her eyes in preparation for a kiss that never came.
Ring-Ring-Ring chimed from Malakai's phone.
They both pulled away quickly. Malakai was perfectly fine with ignoring the call, but this was one he had answer.
