Amara turned the knob in front of her, causing the stream of water hitting her body to cease. She reached for her robe and proceeded to cover her body in the silk material. Her hair was dripping wet and her skin glistening a soft red.
The water was always searing hot when Amara showered, so she was accustomed to her current appearance. Reaching for her towel to wrap up her hair, she heard the sound of her front door slam closed. Stepping from the shower, she called out, "Kaya? Is that you?"
There was no response.
Amara's heart began to race.
She knew no one else could have entered the building unless stating their purpose to Stanley on the first floor, yet for some reason she was nervous.
She tiptoed out of the bathroom and into her bedroom. Listening for any further sounds, she recognized the click of her stove turning on. She scanned the room for her phone and cursed under her breath when she realized she had left it in the bathroom.
Now at the entrance of her bedroom door, she called out once more, "Kaya?"
After a short pause, she was greeted with her friend's sweet voice, "Yeah! I'm in the kitchen!"
Amara let out a sigh of relief.
Walking into the kitchen, she spotted Kaya rummaging through her cupboards, in search of something.
"Jesus Kay, you almost scared me!"
"And how did I do that?" Kaya asked looking back at Amara.
She had a huge smile on her face, exposing her perfectly straight teeth, "I am the only one that has a key to your apartment right, unless..." she raised her brow and leaned back on the countertop.
"No, no, you are the only one," Amara laughed.
Satisfied with her response, Kaya glanced over Amara's appearance, "Ohh getting ready for me?" She teased, motioning towards Amara's robe and wrapped up hair.
"Oh god no!" Amara laughed, unwrapping her hair and tossing the towel at her giggling friend.
She shook out her hair, only for it to fall limply on her shoulders.
"And what do you suppose you are doing?" She questioned Kaya as she took a seat at the bar that wrapped around her kitchen.
She let her fingers trace softly over the marble top and watched as her friend stirred something in a bowl, clearly focused.
"Well..." Kaya began, "knowing you, you probably only got up maybe thirty minutes ago--"
Amara rolled her eyes and smiled, not surprised at how her friend knew her so well.
"You probably stumbled into one of those scalding hot things you call a shower," Kaya took a moment to look back and glanced over her friend's clearly inflamed skin, she smirked, having stood correct.
"Sooo..." she continued, turning back around, "I figured...why not make you breakfast!"
Amara grinned from ear to ear.
"Awww, Kaya..." she whined.
"I know, I know," Kaya interrupted, she placed her hand on her chest and looked off to the side, proud of herself, "I'm the greatest! Oh by the way," she pointed off to her left, "your iced coffee is over there, sweetened with half-and-half, just how you like it."
Kaya looked over her shoulder and winked at Amara, then continued mixing the substance in the bowl in front of her.
Amara looked over at the iced coffee, and her heart warmed, that was just what she needed to get through the morning.
