Kristen was relieved when Lindsey finally walked in the door that afternoon. He had stayed gone all day and night without a word to her. He didn't offer an explanation as to where he had been and she didn't ask. She thought it was probably better not to push him. When the kids came home from school they all wanted to swim and Lindsey joined them. After about half an hour she went outside to watch them play, not really feeling like joining them herself. She talked to Lindsey for a moment discussing dinner, a perfectly normal thing for spouses to do she thought. When he turned away from her that's when she noticed them. His back was covered in scratch marks. She definitely didn't put them there. Not like she didn't know where they came from. She couldn't pretend she didn't notice this. He wasn't even trying to hide it! She was going to have to bring it up.
After dinner the kids were doing homework. Lindsey went into their bedroom and she tried to listen to his conversation. "I miss you. Yeah I know. How did your meetings go today? Yeah? That's great. Hmmhmm." He laughed and his laugh came so easily it made Kristen cringe. He hadn't laughed that easily in a while. "I wish I could have seen that! Just swam with the kids and we just finished up dinner. Oh Yeah? Ok, I have to go now. I love you." God this was getting under Kristen's skin. He was telling her that he loved her? She walked in the bedroom and he seemed surprised to see her. "Hey Kristen what's up?" he asked. "Oh nothing, I was just seeing where you had gotten off to. I missed you." she told him. He didn't respond and that stung. She caressed his face and tried to give him a passionate kiss and was appalled that he seemed to recoil from her touch. She pulled back from him, eyes flashing angrily. "Where were you the last 24 hours Lindsey?" she asked angrily. He hesitated from a moment before answering, "We're just talking about a new Mac album and I was at Mick's playing some new stuff for him and lost track of time and slept over there." he lied. "So I assume Mick is the one who put those scratch marks all over your back then Lindsey? Because I know I damn sure didn't do it!" she yelled. "I don't know what you're talking about. I must've bumped up against something." he continued to lie. "I'm not fucking stupid Lindsey! Who is she? Let me guess, that old ass home wrecking whore? What, she doesn't have someone else's husband to fuck?" she yelled. Lindsey's eyes flashed angrily before he focused on her. She wanted to see him lie his way out of this. "Who are you even talking about Kristen?" he asked. He knew what she was talking about and it was pissing her off that he was trying to feign ignorance. "You know damn well who I'm talking about." she yelled. She knew he wanted her to say it. "Stevie. Don't act like you don't know!" "You don't know a goddamn thing about Stevie! I'm not doing this!" he yelled. He was going to defend her? He wasn't denying that he had been sleeping with her though. He was just evading the question. "You are fucking her aren't you? Aren't you?" she screamed. "I'm not doing this Kristen. When you want to come to your senses let me know." he said before storming angrily out of the house. She heard his car pull away. She had a good idea of where he was going. And she also had a good idea of how to put this to an end once and for all.
Stevie was writing in her journal when she heard a knock at her door. She pulled her robe from the side of the bed and put it on as she walked to the door. When she opened the door she was surprised to see Lindsey, but when she got a good look at his face she knew something was wrong. She pulled him inside and held him in her arms. "Lindsey, what's wrong?" she asked worriedly. He sighed. "I just had a huge fight with Kristen. Everything seemed fine when I got home and then after I got off the phone with you she came in and tried to kiss me. I just wasn't into it and I guess it pissed her off. She started questioning me about where I had been, so I told her I had been at Mick's playing some new music. I guess she had seen scratch marks on my back and started freaking out, asking me who put them there. I didn't answer and she automatically assumed it was you and was just screaming at me and I just couldn't take it so I left. And now I'm here." he finished. Stevie sat silently, not sure what to say. "Lindsey, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen. I don't want to ruin your family." she said quietly. He shook his head. "Stevie, you're not ruining my family. I love you. You and the kids are the only things that make me happy. I've just got to figure out how to get out of all this the best way possible. It just caught me off guard is all." he reassured her. He kissed her lips gently and they held each other just trying to let it all sink in.
