Things seemed to be going much smoother after the initial issue with William. Lindsey and Stevie were really settling in to their life together and Stevie was adjusting well to having kids every other week. They acted like a family, a strange one anyway, as the girls still didn't know that Stevie and Lindsey were together. One week Stevie and Lindsey lived like a couple that was hopelessly in love. The next they were the best of friends trying to hide their relationship from two little girls. It was a little difficult to maintain but the girls adored Stevie and she them, they were just waiting for the right time to tell them. They were having a game night with the kids that night and laughter filled the house. As Stevie watched Lindsey interact with his children her heart melted. This was something that she had always longed for and to be a part of it now made her feel complete. She thought her heart would burst when Leelee reached up and gave her a huge hug, Stevie glued to the little girl's smiling face. "I love you so much Stevie! I wish we could live with you forever!" Leelee exclaimed. Stevie smiled and embraced her a little tighter. "Oh, I love you too sweet girl. I wish you could live with me forever, too." Stevie told her softly. It made her even happier to know that both of their wishes would be coming true. She couldn't wait until they would finally tell the kids everything. Not everything, she corrected herself, but all the things they wanted them to know.
After watching Stevie and Leelee's exchange Lindsey had made a decision. There was no reason to hide this any longer. The girls loved Stevie more than ever and he thought telling them about he and Stevie's relationship would, if anything, make them happy. His divorce with Kristen was final and he thought there was no reason to delay it any longer. He just wanted to talk to Will first. He had promised after all. "Hey buddy, can I talk to you for a minute?" Lindsey said, walking into Will's bedroom. "Yeah, what's up Dad?" he asked. "I just wanted to tell you before anyone else that I'm going to ask Stevie to marry me. I want to tell the girls about it too later. Are you going to be ok with that?" Lindsey asked, nervously waiting for Will's response. "Yeah, I'm fine Dad. Stevie's great. She'll be a great step mom. She kind of is already, you know?" Will said. Lindsey laughed, realizing he was more nervous than he should have been. "Alright, thanks Will. I'll see you in the morning." "Goodnight Dad." Will replied, closing the door behind Lindsey. Breathing an internal sigh of relief he went to go put the girls to bed and read to them like he always did. When he got to Leelee's room he was surprised to see both girls laying on Stevie while she read to them. She had really taken to this family life much better than he could have imagined. He had always imagined her as a mother, picturing her with their newborn child in his wildest dreams. He had given up on that long ago and now realized that she was a mother to his children. Sometimes dreams don't always turn out how they had wanted but this new reality was more than he could have hoped for. He hated to interrupt them but he walked in and kissed the girls goodnight before wishing Stevie a goodnight as well. That part was really a formality. He would be seeing her later.
He rummaged through his closet to find the ring he had stashed for Stevie. He knew her too well. She loved surprises but she couldn't know one was coming or she would drive herself crazy to solve the mystery. He wanted this ring to be a complete surprise. Pulling it from the closet he carefully opened the lid and gazed at the exquisite ring inside. He felt tears well in his eyes as he imagined finally slipping it onto her finger. He quickly worked to control his emotions. He took a few deep breaths before slipping the box into the pocket of his robe. He carefully opened his door and looked around to make sure all the bedroom lights were out. He knew the kids were asleep if they were. All was dark except for the light escaping below Stevie's door. She was waiting for him, he thought smiling to himself. He quietly opened and closed her door behind him before joining her on her bed. She looked beautiful, no makeup on, long hair falling around her, she was propped up by pillows writing in her journal. She put the journal away before looking up at him. "Hi." she said quietly. "Hi. You look beautiful." he told her. She waved the compliment away and he grabbed her hand and kissed it. "You have no idea how great tonight was." he told her. She nodded happily. "I know, it really feels like we're a family. I don't think I could ever get enough of hearing those kids say they love me. I never thought I'd have that." she finished softly. "I think I might love it just as much as you do Stevie. Then she said she wished she could live with you forever and it made me happy to know that we could make her wish to come true. I want to tell them Stevie." he told her. She looked up in surprise. Lindsey usually took his time with this sort of thing, she usually had to push him. "Really? You want to tell them that we're together now? Are you sure?" she said, not wanting to get her hopes up in case he changed his mind. "Not only that, but how much I love you and how much we love them. I want to tell them about our new family because I asked you to marry me. I want to hear the girls scream when they look at your ring. I want to tell them all of those things Stevie. The only thing we're waiting on now is for you to tell me yes. So will you marry me?" he asked, having already slipped the ring on her finger in his excitement. He knew she would say yes. He watched her carefully waiting for her emotional outburst. The tears came and then she began to nod her head furiously. She threw her arms around him and kissed him passionately. "Of course I will. Oh, Lindsey I love you so much. We're going to be such a perfect family!" she sobbed. He laughed happily, knowing that he should have done this a long time ago. "Oh my God! This is gorgeous!" Stevie exclaimed, finally taking the time to look down at her ring. "I knew you would love it. I saw it while we were in Germany and imagined how perfect it would look on your finger and I guess I was right." he said, pleased with himself. As she began to show him how appreciative she was, he couldn't help but think he was a lucky man.
Stevie had a hard time not calling everyone she knew that day to tell them the good news. She was absolutely giddy but she and Lindsey decided that they should tell the kids first. They decided to tell them when they got out of school. However, when Lindsey was in the shower Stevie couldn't contain it anymore. She quietly pulled Karen as far away as she could knowing that Karen's outburst would be similar to her own. "Oh my gosh Karen, I know I shouldn't tell but I can't hold it in anymore. So I'm going to follow the rules. I'm not going to tell you, I'm going to SHOW you." she emphasized, to tell Karen she should be paying attention. Karen gave her a strange look but followed along. Stevie crossed her arms over her chest, placing the left arm on top. She waited impatiently for Karen to finally notice, it was taking her long enough. Finally Karen squealed, letting Stevie know she figured it out. "It took you long enough!" Stevie told her smiling. Karen hugged her tightly. "I can't believe it Stevie! It FINALLY happened! I'm so happy for you! Oh my God, we have so much stuff to do. You are going to have to start thinking about a venue and..." Karen started spouting off quickly before Stevie finally stopped her. "Wait, wait, wait Karen. We cannot do any of that stuff yet. Lindsey and I want to tell the kids first. I wasn't supposed to tell anyone REMEMBER? So calm down and we'll start THINKING about all of this later." Stevie told her, trying to bring her back into reality. God Lindsey would kill her if he knew Karen was already going crazy to start planning. Karen was pouting but did as Stevie asked. "When are you telling the kids?" she asked. "When they get home from school. So in a few hours." Stevie told her. "Don't be nervous, it's going to be fine. Those kids love you." Karen reassured her but Stevie already knew. She was just getting impatient.
Karen had picked the kids up from school and they were all gathered in the kitchen getting their after school snack. Karen got out of the way but hung around to watch this moment. She was excited for Stevie to finally be getting a family. Stevie looked anxiously at Lindsey, silently begging him to tell. She didn't know if she could wait any longer. He nodded and they sat down at the table together. Lindsey cleared his throat and got everyone's attention. "Hey guys, come sit down. I have something important to talk to you all about." "Are we in trouble?" Stella asked immediately. Stevie smiled. "No sweetheart, you are certainly not in trouble. We have something to talk to you guys about and we hope it's a good thing." she said kindly, looking nervously over to Lindsey. "So tell us Daddy!" Leelee said, almost as impatiently as Stevie and Lindsey felt. "Ok guys, you know how we have been staying at Stevie's house and last night Lee, you told Stevie you wished we could stay here forever?" Lindsey began and the little girl nodded her head excitedly. "Well, I know how we can do that. You guys love Stevie alot right?" he asked them and they all answered quickly in the affirmative. "I love you three all so very much." Stevie said quickly before letting Lindsey continue. "So you guys love Stevie and she loves you as well. The thing is, is that I love Stevie very very much too. I have loved her almost my whole life and she loves me that much too." he said, eyes starting to get teary. "I do." Stevie confirmed. "And well, I asked Stevie to marry me and she said yes. So, Stevie is going to be my wife and we are all going to keep living here together. Are you guys ok with that?" he asked nervously. Stevie started getting worried and thought she might be on the verge of tears when the kids didn't say anything immediately. "Can I wear a pretty dress when you get married?" Stella said, the first to break the ice. Stevie motioned for her to come over to her and Stevie pulled her into her lap. "Of course you can, Angel. We can go pick it out whenever you are ready. So you're ok with this?" Stevie asked hesitantly. Stella nodded happily, "I love you Stevie!" she proclaimed. "I love you too." Stevie said. Leelee ran over immediately, noticing Stevie's ring. "Stevie, this is SO fabulous. It looks perfect on your finger. I can't wait for you and Daddy to get married. Do I get to wear a pretty dress too?" she asked excitedly. "Of course you do sweetie. Daddy did a good job picking this out didn't he?" Stevie told her. Leelee nodded. "I don't have any questions about getting a pretty dress for the wedding but I am happy you're marrying my dad. You're cool Stevie." Will told her in his almost a teenager, too cool way. "Thanks Will, I think you're pretty cool too." she said looking happily over to Lindsey, who was almost glowing with happiness. He had been as nervous as she was but it had all worked out. Destiny always had a way of making sure things worked out the way they were supposed to.
