Annetta's POV

Growing up, I never appreciated the freedom of life because I always got what I wanted. I'd ask, I'd receive it right away but right now, I felt so repentant for feeling that type of way. Something I have never felt.

Freedom should be free. It should be given to you automatically, it's simple. Then, why the fuck was it so difficult to explain that to Lombardi men?

I was locked in that room for at least six hours and throughout those hours, I would pace back and fourth, anticipating my leave. Six hours! I mean, who would've thought background checks take six fucking hours? Nobody, but the fact that Fabio likes to test my patience, just to provoke me or punish me, didn't really surprise me.

Finally, after those six dreadful hours, I was granted a leave. Bastardo del cazzo.

As I leave the estate, I was stopped once again. A loud sigh expels from me as I turn around and narrow my eyes down at one of the guards. This estate was a fucking curse.

"What?" I grumble, an ache drowning out my temples as I keep a steady glare on him.

"Signora Morreti, non può ancora partire, don Dante vuole vederla prima che lei si congeda."

I narrow my eyes at him, slightly irritated at the man when it wasn't even his fault. After being locked up for six hours, I'd really like to enjoy the rest of this new day away from this estate, away from him.

With a miffed sigh, I make my way to Dante's office, the last room I was in before what occurred late last night. As I make my way there, anger fuels my system because I anticipated to see Fabio and I was afraid that ai would, afraid that I'd lose control and attack him in front of everybody. I can't believe everyone still thinks we're in love! How isn't it obvious yet? That I fucking hate this man.

When I reached his office, surprisingly the doors were open when it's never open like that. I enter without a thought, my mind was too occupied and in distress that I had not yet realised how I had walked into an audience. I stumble on my feet when I glanced up, at this point, I knew my face grew pale by the minute because I was faced with more than just the motherfùcker, Fabio. I gulp, my throat dry as hell as I blink at everyone that stood in front of me.

"Oh..." I whisper underneath my breath, my gaze bouncing to each and every gaze that watched me.

Sweat saturates my skin as I was under scrutiny, but one of theirs made me anxious. A woman, a little older than everybody here, their mother. His mother.

Shit.

My eyes were steady on her, her brunette hair was pinned up, her body wrapped in a dress, like she returned from a business party or something like that. Her complexion, her face was painted subtly with makeup, but it didn't spoil her natural beauty. I was mesmerised by her beauty, her sharp features were the centre of the attention, it's definitely where Dante had got it from.

I blink at her and only her, my heart thrums in my chest. A sense of perturbation fills me as she continues to scrutinise me. She was plucking out each and every one of my flaws, trying to figure out whether I was good enough for her son or not. I didn't give a shit if I wasn't but the fact that an ex-mafia Queen, the woman who birthed these dangerous mafia men, someone who lived a mafia life and survived, was studying me with so much perspicacity only made me feel insecure and small.

When I snapped out of my reverie, I realised Adriana was too in the room. I felt somewhat relief consume me because my sister was here.

"You wanted to see me..?"
