Annetta's POV

Though Mamma always taught me about the norms of life, she also taught me some of what Destefano always exposed to me.

Mamma once told me that blood was thicker than water but sometimes, blood was just like water. She was right, Destefano was a great epitome. Life teaches you a lot of lesson, some are positive while others are negative. I never really understood when Destefano would talk about life lessons because he never really informed me about the the crucial part. Whereas my mamma taught me everything I needed to do. When she told me that even blood can betray you, I believed her. From watching my father kill all those who betrayed him, even those considered as family to us, I've managed to acknowledge that it's also important to keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

A frustrated sigh spews from my mouth when Seth entered into a room, much smaller compared to the one we just left Fabio and Lorenzo in. My frustration was evident because I had no patience whatsoever. Seth was treading on a fine line of my patience, he had no idea what I was capable of doing right now.

"Get off me." I grunt, yanking my arm away from his hold. I turn to glare over my shoulder, Seth stood behind me with unease, like he knew he fucked up. My throat itches right now because I've realised that I never really got the chance to confront Seth properly. We had a mere interaction a few weeks back, when I first learnt that he was working with Mateo, when all this time, I thought he was innocent and had no part in this. "You better give me a good enough reason as to why you stopped me from pulling that damn trigger on Lorenzo." I grunt again, Seth blinks at me, and then shakes his head.

"I'm preventing the situation from getting out of control. You need to understand that I'm doing this for you."

My throat itches again and something in my chest burned. It was fucking annoying. For years, I built a restraint, a barrier from trusting people because that's what my parents have taught me, specifically my father. But when Seth entered my life, I fell weak. It didn't feel wrong when Seth entered my life, it didn't feel wrong to trust him because I loved him. With that love, I gave him everything. Myself. But when I saw him at the restaurant that night, I've never felt betrayal so deep and authentic. The anger that fuelled from that ignited a certain flame within, that not even repentance could fix. The audacity of him to stand before me, with a face filled with regret made me want to kill him right now.

"Have you always known me, even before we met at university?"

Seth blinks at me again, and for a second, I thought he was going to burst into tears because his eyes were shining with a thin layer of his tears. His face drops, each crease packed with tension on his skin released, like they were relieved with ecstasy. My heart thrums in my chest when Seth slowly saunters to me, I still hate him but the Seth I knew still had a place in my heart.

"No," He whispered, shaking his head defensively. "No I didn't know you. When you left Italy for university, your father still followed you to California to keep his eye on you, and that's when he learned that you'd spend most of your time with me. He reached out to me, threatened to kill me because he thought I wanted something from you but I begged him that I didn't, and that I was only in your life because I was in love with you." I gulp, blinking away from his eyes because I could no longer maintain eye contact with him. Though my heart belonged to another man, this still ached. What Seth and I had was a friendship that I thought that I could have for a lifetime but unfortunately, it wasn't. "I begged that night, I begged him not to kill me and finally, he agreed that he wouldn't. Instead, he gave me no choice but to work for him, and in return, he said he would let me have you in my life."
