chapter five

When Alec felt his eyelids push apart to give him back his sight, confusion quickly rushed through his body. It took him a moment for his vision to clear, blinking a few times until the cloud dissolved. He saw that he was in a hospital room, looking down and seeing various needles jabbed into his arm, a machine quietly beeping beside him.

The memory of the killer seemed distant, although the more he thought about it, the more he realised that he remembered a lot. There was a sudden stop in his memory, though, knowing that he must have passed out. Alec wondered why he was still alive, turning his head to see Magnus passed out in a hospital chair.

Alec smiled as much as he could, glad that he was there, but also worried about how long he had been there. Not thinking about his fresh stitches, Alec moved his body slightly so that he was sat up properly, letting out a small groan of pain as a sharp rush of discomfort slithered up his torso. 

The sound brought Magnus out of unconsciousness, his eyes slowly opening, and then quickly getting wide as he saw Alec. "You're awake," Magnus said happily, almost falling over in excitement as he stumbled towards the bed. The first thing that Alec wanted to, and did, ask was, "How long have you been sitting there? Your hair looks pretty greasy."

Magnus laughed slightly, glad that Alec seemed comfortable enough to make jokes. "You were brought in three days ago, but they didn't let me in until yesterday, so I've been sitting here since then. Your parents only left a few hours ago." Alec knew that his family couldn't be there 24/7 as they didn't know when he was going to wake up and they needed to rest.

Alec realised that no nurses or doctors had come into the room now that he was awake, which meant that they didn't know. "Can we just sit here for a second? As soon as the nurses know that I'm awake, so will the police, and I'm not really in the mood to talk about what happened yet." Alec asked Magnus quietly, Magnus replying with an understanding nod and a small smile.

Pulling the cover off of his body slightly, Alec showed that he wanted Magnus to sit in the bed with him. Magnus raised an eyebrow at the offer, mentioning that it looked like a pretty small bed and Alec was a pretty big guy. "It'll be cosy, come on." Alec said with a small laugh, patting the space next to him as if Magnus was a cute dog.

Magnus found the smile hard to resist, gently climbing into the bed after pushing his shoes off, feeling like every movement would hurt Alec. "I'm not going to die if you want to come closer," Alec laughed, ignoring the small pain as he threw an arm around Magnus' shoulder, pulling the boy closer so that their bodies touched.

There was a comfortable silence for a few seconds before Magnus said quietly, "I was really scared that you were going to leave me." The statement hit both of them hard. Even though Magnus had said it, he hadn't truly thought about the words before speaking and so it was almost as if neither of them had said it.

Alec turned his head so that he made eye contact with Magnus, just noticing how small the bed actually was as their faces were only inches apart. "I didn't think that I would survive either, but I'm here. I'm, somehow, alive." Alec replied, his tone showing the honest surprise that he was feeling.

 "It's a miracle, and I'm going to take advantage of it." Alec finished with a small smile, putting a hand over Magnus'. Magnus felt the happiness radiating off of Alec from dodging the bullet, opening his mouth to say something. Before he could get any words out, there was a voice at the doorway.

Magnus and Alec both turned, seeing a nurse standing next to two tall men dressed in suits, presumably the police. "I'm sorry, I heard you guys talking." The nurse said, before rushing off, leaving the suited men with the teenagers. Magnus sighed, pushing the covers off of his legs and getting out of the bed.
