(DAYU)

Are you my Nana's first love...

Did you harassed her...

Those are about the only things that resounded in my head upon hearing Qing's questions to my grandfather.

Those words...they don't make sense. Why is Qing asking those questions to Grampy? Why?

I look at my grandfather. Grampy's face paled first. Colors draining from it. But soon...they came back, so is the anger in his eyes.

"Harassed? I never hurt ShiAn. I loved her." Grampy ground every letter as he answered Qing's questions.

ShiAn? Is that the name of Qing's Nana?

"You loved her? So it's true, you and my Nana..."

"Yes," Grampy nodded grimly. "ShiAn and I met and fell in love back in our University days. We truly love each other..."

"Then how did she ended up with my Wowo?" Qing curiously followed up.

"You have to ask Guan about that." Grampy sneered. "He, more than anyone, should answer that question. How did he managed to get your grandmother."

I closed my eyes. Because the way my Grampy's hands fisted on top of the table and in the cold way he delivered those words, I can surmise that he was not happy when Qing's grandparents ended up together.

"Is that why you hate Qing's grandfather, Grampy? Because he took the woman you first loved?" I asked.

"Took?" Grampy chuckled humorlessly. "Yes, you can use that word to describe what Wang Guan did. Snatch, will be another appropriate term. Betrayal will be accurate as well. I trusted him but then he betrayed me..."

"He betrayed you? You trusted him..." Qing glanced at me. "That will mean that you and my Wowo are once close..."

"We were friends," Grampy's jaw ticked while making that confession. Qing and I were both surprised to hear that. Grampy smirked at our stunned faces, "Don't be that surprised. Did you think Guan and I started as enemies? No. We grew up together. He was a helper, a slave, in our household. I am the young master of the house. But I treat our helpers with respect. And Guan, he was a smart boy. Younger than me, he was assigned to help me in my studies. He learned characters and numbers with me. I treated him like a younger brother. Helping him in any way I can..."

"Very generous of you, no doubt." Qing sounded skeptical while listening to Grampy.

But Grampy is confident, "I have people that can attest to my words, boy. I never mistreat our helpers and servants..."

"But you kill them," Qing said without hesitating.

"What?!" My eyes widened at what he said. "Who...killed...what?"

Grampy's face grew stormy, "I see that Guan is running his mouth so freely."

This...all of this...is blowing my mind. I am a writer but I cannot conjure a scenario like this. Grampy kills people?

"That is not true, right Grampy?" I gave him a pleading look. "Please..."

I look around, glad that this restaurant is not crowded and tables are placed with significant space away from each other. Other patrons of the restaurant cannot hear our conversation.

"Of course it is not true, Yu ah." Grampy glared at Qing. Then he gave a resigned sigh, "But I will admit, we do have a violent history in our family." Grampy gave me a sad look. "My father...he was not a good man, Yu ah."
