"We're the same... the same... stepladders..."

   "...Huh?"

Nagito stood next to Hajime with his eyes locked on Monokuma rock. Other than the small movements of his mouth, Nagito stood still like a statue.

"You and I... are just stepladders," the white-haired boy spoke."For everyone who holds the title of Ultimate... I always believed that I didn't mind... unlike you, I know my place."

"Wh-What are you... saying...?" Hajime asked, taking a small step away from Nagito.

"That's why I was prepared to become a sacrifice at any time. And from that, true hope would be born..." Nagito replied, his hand repositioned on his hip. "I always believed that the talent that survived would be true hope." Nagito's expression twisted to one that was full of anger and despair. "But it wasn't! There's no hope amidst this killing!"

"O-Of course there isn't! What kind of hope comes from killing people?!" Hajime asked.

"Hm... really? Are you suggesting... that sacrificing others for hope isn't real hope?" Nagito countered, ignoring the others question. "But... you're wrong. It's only natural and extremely obvious strong hope devours weak hope. After all, isn't that what it means to live?!" Nagito asked, laughing a bit.

"Th-there's no way I'm going to accept that...!" Hajime yelled.

"Oh well... not like that's what I wanted to say to you anyways..." Nagito sighed, crossing his arms and looking at the ground.

He then proceeded to tell Hajime about a peculiar mystery novel he liked. He explained that the story was told from the perspective of a high school girl who got involved in a serial killer mystery. He then revealed at the end of the story, the girl turned out to be the killer all along, and that the story was so carefully written that no one would be able to find out the end in the middle of the story.

He asked Hajime what he thought, Hajime responded by being freaked out and confused over Nagito jumping from topic to topic. Nagito grumbled at his similars response, "...Such a normal answer. I should've expected that from a talentless reverse course student like you..."

He then smiled, "I know you don't matter at all, so why do I care about you? You admire hope... I love hope... in some ways we're similar, but maybe that difference is what's making me so emotional."

Hajime scoffed and told the other boy that he didn't have time to argue with him and that everyone else was waiting. Nagito laughed in Hajime's face at how full of himself he sounded for "thinking he was like everyone else," before disappearing into monokuma rock.

Hajime shook his head and assured himself to calm down before stepping into monokuma rock.

The trial went on, as usual, the end product showing it was Gundham responsible for Nekomarus death. Hajime retuned to his cottage, his heart and eyes heavy. He collapsed on his bed as soon as he shut his door. He stared up at the ceiling as his mind drifted back to what Nagito had said.

   "Stepladder, huh?"

    ...

"There's no way I'm believing that..." he grumbled, rolling over on his side. He forced his eyes shut, struggling to fall asleep. After some time, Hajime was finally able to sink into the darkness of his mind, ending in a deep sleep...

The next morning Hajime silently drug his feet to the restaurant, slight bags had appeared under his eyes.  Hajime didn't bother to listen to what the others had to say, he was too tired to even think.
