Chapter 20 – Bucket List

Louis’ POV

The words ‘brain tumour’ kept wizing round my mind. She had a brain tumour. My little sister.

“But it will be okay right?” I asked. “I mean, she’s only 16. There will be some kind of operation won’t there? She’ll be okay won’t she? Please tell me she’ll be okay?” I added, tears streaming down.

“I’m sorry,” The doctor said apologetically. “There is nothing we can do about it. It’s too serious.”

“Nothing?! There has to be something you can do?! She’s my sister. My little sister. I’ll pay whatever, I don’t care just make her better. Make it go away, please.” I shouted and begged.

“I’m sorry Mr Tomlinson. The cells are cancerous and have grown too much. We can’t remove the cells without a 99% chance of death or serious mental problems. That’s a risk we can’t afford to take. It costs too much.”

“Cancerous?” I whispered the word, not daring to say it too loudly. “Isn’t there some treatment or something?”

“Katie’s case has gone too far. We will provide some tablets to take twice a day to stop headaches, bleeding and seizures but the tumour won’t shrink. Not now.” I broke down, falling to the floor and tugging at my hair. There was nothing that they could do to save her. “Katie would like to see you.” Another doctor said, peeping her head around the door to a dishevelled looking me and the calm doctor. I was led to her room. Her eyes were pink and she still had some dried blood around her nose.

“Louis? What’s wrong with me?” She asked when I appeared in the doorway. “They won’t tell me.” I glanced over to Katie’s doctor, who nodded.

“Darling, you’ve got,” I started, stumbling on my words.

“Please just tell me, I don’t care if it’s blunt.” Katie urged me.

“Katie, you’ve got a cancerous brain tumour.” I said, choking on my words as I forced back tears, a lump forming my in throat.

“But they can make it go can’t they?” She whispered, tears pouring out of her pinky eyes. I shook my head, squeezing my eyes closed tightly.

“No baby.”

“How long?” Katie asked me.

“Don’t Katie.” I sobbed. “Please don’t.”

“Louis how long?” She urged. I shrugged and the doctor who was still in the room answered for me.

“Miss Tomlinson, I’m afraid to say that the answer to your question is two months.” The doctor said sadly. Two months? She’s only got two months of her life left.

“Two months?” Katie sobbed loudly into my chest. “Only two months? I’m 16 Louis. I don’t want to die.” I rocked her back and forth, stroking her hair.

“I know sweetie.” Tears were pouring out of my own eyes. I was going to lose her and there was nothing anyone could do about it. “You know what we’ll do?” She shook her head. “Make a bucket list. All of the things you want to do we’ll do in the next two months. I promise.”
