"... Gilbert?" Anne asked in a confused whisper.
"Yeah, it's me. I'm sorry I had to push you but I promised to slay any dragons for you didn't I?" he chuckles softly, looking at Anne with pure love in his hazel eyes. An ache or perhaps, even a pleading for the girl with the flaming hair, was veiled. None but a few could read his eyes the way they were truly written but when you did it was a story sweet and melancholy and wonderous beyond measure.
Anyone could see that he loved her, but no one knew exactly how much. He, himself only knew he how much he would do for this girl. More than all believed to be possible. No one could see exactly how much he cared but they saw enough, enough to know that he loved her with a fiery passion and couldn't and wouldn't love anyone else. They all saw. All except her and knowing that broke him just a little. It seemed ridiculous to others, that he could possibly love a girl he has known for such a short time. He's too young they say. He doesn't understand. Maybe when he's older he'll accept it. But he knew how he felt.
Gilbert shook free of the grasp his thoughts had on him. They tended to become a bit carried away as of late and he couldn't think of any other reason besides Anne. Quickly he realized that his hand was still extended, a peace offering perhaps, he mused.
"Aren't you going to take my hand m'lady?" he smirked.
Anne looked up at him, his soft curly brown hair and stupid smirk. She noticed how the sun was right behind his head making the golden rays dance around it, it seemed as if he were wearing a halo.
'Snap out of it!' she silently scolded herself for allowing such imagination. For once it wasn't helping her at all.
It didn't matter though because she hated him. Right? Right. With that conclusion firmly planted in her mind, she refused to take his hand and stood up. Although, not as elegantly as she imagined. Instead of standing up and stalking away she almost fell to the ground again. Her legs were still shaky and her head was woozy. That rock had it out for her.
Luckily Gilbert was there to catch her. Anne, no matter how much she would surely deny it, was grateful that he caught her. She leaned against his chest and his hands steadied her. She let his arms envelop her. It felt as if her skin was electric, every place where they touched was alive and Anne's heart pounded. Slowly she raised her head to meet his gaze. His cheeks were tinted a soft pink and it was adorable. No. Gilbert Blythe was not adorable. He was stupid. She shook free of his grip and took a step back not breaking eye contact.
"I don't need your help Gilbert! I can take care of myself, and I most certainly can slay my own dragons!" she said mocking his boyish 'charm'
With that Anne stormed off into the schoolhouse with a strange fluttery feeling in her stomach unaware of why she felt so strange. This was not the usual feeling of hatred. This was not the acidic feeling that pooled within her accompanying the boiling of her blood. No, this was a whole new feeling, one she was unsure of. She didn't know what scared her more; not knowing what this feeling was or knowing exactly who and what caused it.
