She ignored the sound of falling feet as they landed on the crunchy leaves. Gilbert running far behind her. What he didn't know was that she could run forever, and she had gotten very good at it. She felt free, the fresh air filling her lungs and flowing through her hair. Right now, however, she had much more important things to deal with, like, 'what had just happened? Was she about to kiss Gilbert? Did she really want to kiss him?' She needed time to think, she needed space. Away from him.
"Anne wait! stop, please!" Gilbert's voice became hoarse, from shouting or something more she didn't know.
She didn't stop nor did she slow, however, she heard the pace of the footsteps quicken as Gilbert ran faster to catch up.
"I wanted to talk about what just happened!" he said.
She didn't answer. She regretted allowing herself to feel this way. Allowing herself to become carried away. It would not happen again. She wasn't supposed to be feeling this way.
"I don't want to talk," she said her voice raising a fraction towards the end.
"Yeah b-b-but ..well um about what happened back there, I just thought—"
"Well, you thought wrong!!" She was shouting now, but she had slowed down tremendously, tears started to prickle behind her eyes. She blinked a few times, stopping any possible tears before she turned around to face him.
"Ok," he said catching his breath, "can we please talk though?" His eyes pleaded with her own and she almost gave in. But she promised herself she wouldn't. Not again. She had to cut ties, For good.
"Gilbert! get it through your head, I don't want you to talk to me! I hate you, you're the enemy, my rival! You're unbelievably unbearable! Anything you think happened was a mistake and I regret every second of it! If I could take it all back I would in an instant!" As soon as the words tumbled out of her mouth she knew she made a mistake.
She saw the broken look in his eyes. Less than two hours ago they were passionate and soft, they had looked at her like she was the only girl in the world and she was the only girl he ever wanted, needed, hoped, or dreamed for. Now they were shattered, broken; destroyed.
If a window has a curtain the owner of the house can choose if they want passersby to view the room in question, they may close the curtain or leave it open for all the world to see. However, if someone were to come into the house, angry and vengeful, they can rip down the curtains and now anyone can see inside. They can see inside, but perhaps the window is foggy, thick clouds of thought, confusion or fake emotions cast in front of it, now only who are close may see; the ones who are allowed to press their noses flush to the glass and peer through. But, of course, none of this matters if someone comes by one day and throws a ball of hurtful words and actions at the window, a boulder of hate that can easily destroy its thin glass. It can shatter before you even realise what happened and never be put back together the same. Now anyone can see through the window whether you allow them to or not.
She could see it all. The pain. The real, raw pain. Everything he couldn't possibly say he told her with his eyes. He didn't need to say anything, she could already see the damage she caused. It was an unwritten story of sorrow and he had let her see. Something that he so desperately tried to hide from the world and especially her. He clenched his jaw, pressed his lips together and gave her a small nod. She watched as this time he walked away from her, but she didn't follow, she just stood rooted to the spot. Waves of guilt and cascading tears in the autumn evening.
