Anne ran inside the schoolhouse, closing the door loudly behind her and pressing her back to it, breathing heavily.
'How dare Gilbert be so chivalrous and kind?!' It was rather repulsive. Whatever was happening to her needed to stop, never had she ever felt this way before.
Surely she wasn't ill and it wasn't her flowering time. So why did she have this weird feeling in her stomach? It was like it had taken upon itself to learn gymnastics and flip and twist into knots. She made a mental note to ask Diana after class. Deciding to prepare for class early, she hung up her coat and hat and sat in her seat, Diana came in a moment later.
"Where were you? Do not tell me you stayed to chat with Gilbert!" She asked adding extra emphasis on his name, rolling her eyes. Diana and Gilbert? Please, she knew Diana secretly liked Jerry.
"Why yes I was, he told me to tell you he's madly in love with you!" She giggled, speaking as though she was performing Shakespeare rather than having a casual conversation.
"Haha, very funny," she said with no trace of humour in her voice. This only made Diana giggle more.
Anne couldn't help but chuckle at her best friends antics. This interaction, however, did little to aid her brain into thinking about what Mr Phillips was teaching. She kept thinking of Gilbert and how she felt around him. She tried to focus and retain the information being taught to her but it was proving to be very difficult when she felt Gilbert's eyes on her. She was tired of having to worry about how this stupid boy affected her, she would give him a taste of his own medicine. She glared over at him but he wasn't paying attention, just as she was about to look away she noticed there was one single curl on his head out of place. She wanted to tuck the curl down and feel his hair, it looked so soft. She imagined what it would feel like to run her fingers through it, tangle them and pressing her palms to be flush against the back of his neck, feeling how soft his hair would be under the pads of her fingers.
'Shoot!' Gilbert must have noticed that she was staring and turned towards her.
She looked him in the eyes and was mesmerized. They were a beautiful hazel, dark brown with flecks of greens. They gleamed and twinkled with rich vibrant colour. They reminded her of a forbidden forest she wanted to explore but couldn't just yet. His lips curved into a small smile, they looked soft and plump like pillows. If only she could reach out and touch them to assure herself he was real. What would they feel like? What if his lips accidentally brushed against her own? Surely it wouldn't be that bad. She wanted this moment to last forever.
But it couldn't, although it almost felt like it. Time had slowed, it was tunnel vision, no one else existed but them. Them... and Mr Phillips. He spoke out very loudly, making sure the whole class could hear his sarcastic drawl. Obviously seeing the two of them not paying attention to him made him furious and he seized this opportunity to give them both detention after school. His head visibly grew a bit more as he returned to his lesson.
Very embarrassed and flustered, she turned away quickly and shook her head.
' Whats wrong with me?! that did not just happen. I hate Gilbert and his stupid smirks and adorable face and... arghh STOP' she blushed, thankful it was beyond impossible to read minds.
"Looking at the view Anne?" This time it was Diana, "I knew this day would come, you're so in love" she taunted in a mere whisper.
"Well, if you and Jerry are going to whisper and giggle in French, the language of love I might add, I should be able to stare lovingly at Mr Phillips whenever I want!" She hissed under her breath.
"Anne!" was all she could say. She was flustered at being exposed, thinking her 'secret' conversations with Jerry were secret when they most certainly not, and at the fact that Anne had even joked about liking Mr Phillips of all people. Ew.
She giggled at her own joke and thankful she covered up the strange moment she had with Gilbert, she didn't know what took over her but she couldn't stop her brain from racing at that moment. All these daydreams and questions came tumbling to the front of her brain and in that split second she couldn't and for some bizarre reason, didn't want them to stop. Anne forced herself to focus and she went back to writing, unable to ignore the goofy smile plastered on Gilbert's face for the rest of the lesson.
