The darkness of the night wrapped around her and fell into every corner of her room the moment she blew out the candle, releasing a quiet exhale. Anne was eternally glad she could fade away from reality if only for a few hours.
The night always gave for new ideas and inspiration in the form of dreams. They also gave her the opportunity to rest her constantly racing brain, for without sleep her mind would slow and tire with the burden of all the information she absorbed daily and of course the scope of her imagination would decrease dramatically. But tonight wasn't about any of that, tonight was about her trying to forget her last exchange with Gilbert. Her final exchange. Although it was a week ago she still thought that Gilbert seemed off, it was like a strange alternate reality where they never spoke or acknowledged each other. She wanted this though, she cut ties and she was ok with this, but if she was, then why did she still feel... lost? It was like a part of her was missing and for some unbeknownst reason could only be found in the presence of a certain curly headed boy and his witty remarks. There was just something about Gilbert Blythe.
Tonight she lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep. Gilbert slowly left her thoughts and she directed her attention to Marilla, she had begun to worry her. She felt overwhelmed when thinking of Gilbert and Marilla, they both consumed her thoughts every waking hour. It seemed as if Marilla's age had doubled in barely any time. None would admit how truly worried every Cuthbert was and the house was blanketed in stillness. Even Rachel Lynde, the most talkative person in all of Avonlea, seemed sombre. Matthew insisted that Anne continued her studies despite the concern that clouding his eyes. And so Anne, burdened with the weight of what felt like a million suns, sought out the only place she felt peace.
In the vast fields, where the flowers swayed in the breeze and intoxicating scents wafted through the air. On the cliffs overlooking the ocean, where the air is salty enough you can taste it and cool sea spray tickles your face. Deep in the forest where springy moss and tall trees grow, sunbeams peeking their way through the canopy and gracing the falling leaves, creating a golden path for the sole person who dares venture far enough into its expanse.
Nature was her happy place and finally, thinking of something that could soothe her worries if only for a short time, she could sleep.
It felt as if she had only closed her eyes for a moment when there was a loud crash quickly followed by insistent knocking on her door, Matthew shouting to her through the thick oak.
"Anne! Wake up it's Marilla," Fear lacing his trembling voice, "Come downstairs at once!"
She sprung from the bed, any grogginess quickly shaken away, being replaced with absolute terror. A million questions racked her brain but she hadn't any time to answer them. She sprinted out of her room and bolted down the stairs, wielding a candle, barefooted. Both feet fell to the landing and her eyes scanned the dark, barely assisted by the tiny flame she grasped. The sight below her was enough to make her head spin and her heart plummet. She reached out for the railing to steady herself, anything that she had ever learned that could possibly help her now seemed to disappear, her mind went void and the image in front of her seared itself in place of any rational thought or useful knowledge. Her mind swallowed her and she let herself be taken by the despair and severity being brought upon her in this dreadful circumstance.
She couldn't lose her.
