As George and I walk back down the hall, my mind somehow keeps wandering back to Finn. I shake my head and focus on little George pulling me along.
I guess I'm not going to change my clothes.
He tugs me through the living room and out the door yelling the whole way.
"Hurry Max, hurry!!!"
"I'm coming, I'm coming!"
He sure is strong for a six year old.
I tug on his hand causing him to slow down and stop.
"What is it?" He asks.
I smile at him. "I think we could be even faster if I give you a piggyback ride." His eyes light up with understanding.
"Oh yes." He breathes.
I squat down as he scrambles on my back, boney legs thrashing. "Now we can charge off to victory!" I yell as I jump off the porch.
"Yipee!!" He hollers as I carry him away from the house.
I run slowly at first so I won't jostle him but he manages to stay on so then I pick up the pace.
We race down the path to a brown, wooden garden shed he directs me to.
He slides off my back and shushes me as we move over to the side of the shed. He bends down and sticks his hand into a space between the boards and the ground. I put my hands on my knees and try to look under.
He pulls out a mewling tabby kitten, with claws out not looking happy at all. I gasp. It's so cute!!
He gives me the kitten. "Watch the kitty for me." Then he pulls out two more. One is an orange tabby and the other one is a tuxedo kitten. He sticks them both under his arm, petting them gently as they scramble to get away.
My phone buzzes in my pocket and I shift the little kitten to my other hand, fishing out my phone.
My best friend Crystal is calling, so I hold my phone up to my ear and hand George back the kitten, motioning him to put them back. He looks a little sad but I will can it up to him later.
"Hey!" I say.
"Omg Max!! How's was the plane ride? How is Montana? Is it as pretty as you thought? Why didn't you text us right away?!?" She huffs out a little angrily.
It's nice to hear her voice. I miss her a lot already.
"Woah, chill chica. Sorry for not texting right away and yes it is very pretty here." I motion for George to get back on so I can take him to the house. He slips on and I hold onto his leg with one of my hands to make sure he doesn't fall.
"But there are ten boys!!" I say extra dramatically.
There are several gasps from the other end of the line. "Say WHAT?!!!"
"Yeah ten."
"She pushed out ten fucking kids??!?"
I snort. "No, only seven are her sons the other three are her nephews." And what do you mean us? Are you with Emma and Malorie?!?"
I can practically hear her nod. "Yeah we wanted to get together then FaceTime you so you wouldn't be so lonely!"
"Aw thanks! But can I call you back? I'm kinda busy right now." I struggle to keep George on my back.
"Oh, yeah go ahead."
"Don't worry, I won't forget this time!" I smile at the the phone.
She laughs. "You better not!"
