8 year old Josh sat on the swing in the desolate playground by himself. He could see some children over in the field that was just over the gate playing soccer, but apart from that, it was incredibly lonely. Why did Mom and Dad have to come to Louisville, thought Josh, and why did Connor have to sleep so long? If his little brother wasn't sleeping, maybe he would have had someone to play with.
After what felt like years of aimlessly swinging, he felt someone else's presence, or well, a group of someone elses. As he looked up, he saw five or six kids, certainly older than him, towering over Josh. He wasn't going to lie, they did intimidate him, but he wasn't going to let them know that.
"H-hi," he stuttered out. Stupid voice, he thought to himself as he nervously looked at the boys.
"Oh lookie here, boys," one of them remarked, "look at the wittle tiny boy, all scared and everything." Josh tried to sit up, to seem a little taller.
"Maybe we could crush him," one exclaimed a little too excitedly. An evil smile appeared on the first boy's face as he started walking towards him. Josh put his arms up in front of his face and braced himself for what was coming next.
"Leave him alone Rhys!" someone shouted. Josh looked up to see the bully circle open and a girl, about his age walked through.
"Who's going to stop me? You?" asked Rhys, amusement lacing his voice. The girl laughed.
"First, I kinda have. And second of all, not me doofus, my brother."
A scared expression replaced the relaxed demonic look on all of the boys before they darted away.
The girl looked into his eyes, and smiled, filling Josh with this weird tingly feeling that he was more than happy to experience. Just before he could utter a single word, another voice called out.
"JEN! HURRY UP! WE GOTTA GO NOW!"
Jen turned around towards the source of the voice and shouted back, "OKAY I'M COMING!" Even when she was shouting, her voice was so angelic to Josh. Before she ran off, she smiled.
As Josh saw her petite body vanish in the distance, it occurred to him.
He didn't get to thank her.
He also realised that he would never forget those eyes.
