I opened my eyes as sunlight hit my face. I rolled over and saw that Gilbert was gone. "Gil?" No response. I got up from the bed and wrapped myself in my maple leaf blanket. Fuzzy. My tired brain thought. I walked down the stairs and heard bangs and muttered curses from the kitchen. I walked over and peeked my head in to see Gilbert struggling with the dishwasher. "Dumme Sache. Warum willst du nicht arbeiten?" I entered the room quietly and sat down at the table. "Gil, what are you doing?" He jumped slightly at my voice and turned around, suprised that I was awake.

"Um... Making breakfast?" He shrugged. I started to laugh. "Vhat's so funny?" He said angrily. I pointed to the dishwasher. "I think that is used after we eat Gil. That's my dishwasher." He stood there for a second thinking. "Gott verdammt!" He swore in his tongue. He turned and took something out of it and put it in the stove. "What are you cooking?" I asked, curious about his behaviour. "Wurst." I looked at him confused. "Worst? Worst what?" He laughed. "No, wurst! It's sausage."

"Oh. Can you put maple syrup on 'wurst'?" Gilbert looked at the ceiling, thoughtful. "I sink so. I've never tried it before vith maple syrup." He sat down at the table next to me and smiled. "Today zhe awesome me is taking jou somevhere." My eyes widened. "Where?" He laughed and poked my nose. "Not telling. It's a suprise." I pouted. Well that's not fair. At least he didn't leave me alone. I smiled but then frowned as the voice filled my head. He will. And when he does, he won't look back at your pathetic excuse of a nation.

"Matthieu?" I looked up at Gilbert. "Is somesing vrong?" I nodded slightly. "Vhat is it?" He asked concerned. "The voices..." I mumbled loud enough for him to hear. He sighed and hugged me. "Vhat are zhey saying?" He asked. "That you'll leave and when you do, you won't look back at my 'pathetic excuse of a nation'." He sighed and kissed my cheek. "Zhat's not true. Do jou hear zhat voices? I von't be leaving anytime soon." He said the last part into my ears and the voices shut up. "Zhey aren't talking now, are zhey?" He laughed.

I shook my head. "No. But they didn't leave either. They never do..." It was quiet as the smell of cooking sausage or wurst filled the house. Gilbert got up and stirred the wurst before sitting back down and hugging me again. "So," Gilbert said, breaking the silence. "I am going to take jou somevhere after breakfast. Und jou are going to smile und laugh und have fun, okay?" I smiled slightly, my stomach doing flip-flops. "Okay." Gilbert pulled up my chin so I was looking into his eyes. "Jou should smile more often. It suits jou very vell." I felt my face heat up and I knew it was red from blush.

After we ate breakfast-which Gilbert says the maple syrup somehow made wurst taste more awesome- we packed suitcases and drove in Gilbert's car drove for a few hours. I asked him where we were going, but he only replyed with, "Jou'll see vhen ve get zhere." and an elusive smile. I closed my eyes for a nap and when I opened them, the world outside the car was white. Snow! I jumped up in my seat and pressed my hands against the window, desperate to feel the chill of winter. "Nope, not yet." I looked over to see him grinning like an idiot. "Can you at least tell me where we are?" I looked out at the evergreen trees.

"Jou of all people should know vhere ve are! It is jour own country after all!" I turned slowly and stared at him. "You drove to Canada? But how? We were in Florida! It would take two days to-" I stopped. "You put us on a plane while I was sleeping, didn't you?" He smiled wider. "Maybe~." I tried to get angry at him, but I couldn't bring myself to yell at him. He brought me to my home. I looked out the window at the swirling snow. "I love it this time of year." I whispered. Soon, a cabin appeared out of the white. "Ve're here~!"

I looked at the old log cabin, fit with a porch and a chimeny billowing out smoke. "Ah perfect! He left zhe fire going!" He parked the car under the side porch out from the snow. He stopped the car and smiled. "Ready?" I laughed and opened the door, snow instantly blowing into the car, filling my nose with crisp air. I grabbed my bags and walked through the thigh deep snow to the porch. Putting my bags inside, I went back out into the storm and stood for a minute. It's been so long since I've been out here.

"Matthieu! Vhat are jou doing? It's freezing out zhere!" I turned to face Gilbert. He stood standing in the doorway, shivering. I smiled and walked over, my breath visable. "But I like it outside." I complained as he ushered me inside and shut the door. "Ve can go outside vhen the veather is nicer." I pouted and sat by the window. I watched the snow batter the side of the cabin, the wind roaring furiously. I walked over to the couch and Gilbert came over with a small radio. He sat down and turned on the radio to a station and we sat and listened to the news.

"Verdammt Matthieu. Does jour country always have of storms like zhis?" I nodded. "The last few winters have been easy. This is the first real snowstorm in years." Gilbert looked at me shocked. "Jour kidding." I shook my head. "Nope. No joke." Gilbert whistled. Soon we grew tired and fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up, I was clinging to Gilbert's arm and a pillow. I closed my eyes again and listened to the wind howl outside. Then I had a thought. I wonder if we're far enough up north. I got up from the couch and walked to the window. And gasped. There, decorating the sky for miles around, was the Aura Borealis. I watched the colours dance across the sky to an unknown beat.

I looked back at Gilbert then opened the door. I walked outside and into the now waist deep snow. I looked up at the sky and stood still, watching the Northern Lights show all of the creatures below how beautiful they were. The greens and blue's swirled as the orange danced on the horizon. Reds melted into purple as it danced along side the green. Soon I could see shapes form in the lights, animals. Wolves, polar bears, caribou, owls and many other creatures filled the sky. I stared up at the sky in wonder, letting the North welcome me home.

~Fluffieness. Gilbert brought Matthieu home to make him feel better! The Northern Lights was just an idea, I've never seen them before. One day I might though! Also for those of you who don't know, Aura Borealis means Northern Lights.
