A girl about 8 years old ran through the crowded streets of Paris. This girl was Rose Pontmercy. She was looking for her friends, Enjolras, Eponine, and Courfeyrac. Her older brother, Marius, was sick and could not come down to play with them. Her heart was racing while she ran in between the legs of all the adults. She spotted some police officers walking through the street on their giant horses and took a sharp turn. In front of her was a gigantic house. The gates were covered with tree branches and behind the gates played a girl no older than Rose. She was humming a tune while sitting on the damp grass. She spotted Rose behind the gates and sent a smile at her. Rose grinned back and waved. The girl got up from the grass and ran towards the gate, it was locked and the girl stood behind it looking at Rose happily.
''Bonjour" said Rose with an equally happy face.
''Bonjour. My name is Cosette" said the girl. Her blonde hair was long and her blue eyes twinkled as she spoke.
''I am Rose" Rose's brown hair fell on her shoulders and her green eyes shone like emeralds.
''Can we be friends?" asked Cosette hopefully. Rose nodded her small head happily. They were interrupted however when a man stepped outside of the house and towards them.
''Papa, this is Rose. She's my friend" said Cosette to the man who Rose now knew was her father. The man smiled gently at Cosette. There was nothing but love in his eyes. He then turned to Rose with an equally gentle smile.
"It is nice to meet you Rose" he said.
''It is nice to meet you too Monsieur" she said. Her family had tought her manners.
"Take care you two. I will have to go inside for now" said the man and walked back inside. Cosette and Rose played a game together. Although, there was the metal gate between them they still spoke to each other and played simple games. Rose noticed that the sun was beginning to set.
''Bye bye Cosette" she said while waving. She would be in trouble if she went home when the sky had darkened. Cosette waved and ran inside her own house. Rose ran back to the big house and up to her brother's room. He looked much better than he did this morning.
''Where were you Rose?" he asked suspiciously.
"I made a new friend" she said excitedly. Marius rolled his eyes and went back to his bed.
"Granddad said that I could go out tomorrow" said Marius excitedly. Rose squeeled and clapped her hands happily. Her brother always took her with him on the adventures he had with his friends.
''Go sleep now Rose" said Marius as he shooed her out of his room. Rose ran across the hall to her room. She fell asleep instantly after promising herself that she would meet Cosette again.
----------
The next day Marius knocked on his sister's door loudly. Rose woke with a start and quickly got dressed. She followed Marius down the stairs and out of the house. Enjolras and Eponine were already waiting for them in front of the giant elephant.
''Where's Courfeyrac?" asked Rose.
''He went out to look for new people" said Enjolras. They went through the hidden door and jumped inside the big elephant. They sat in darkness while Marius' small hands fumbled with a candle until it lit. The candle illuminated the elephant and they could see each other clearly. There was a hurried knock on the door in a certain pattern. Enjolras opened up quickly and Courfeyrac ran inside with two other boys behind him. One of them had blonde hair hair and brown eyes. The other had curly black hair and sparkling blue eyes.
"These are Grantaire and Jehan" said Courfeyrac with a smug smile. Rose waved at the two boys before taking a seat next to Eponine. Her and Eponine were good friends since they were the only two girls in the group. Although Enjolras was rich, he believed in the freedom of all the other people in the streets. He was only 10 yet he thought like some one who was 20. He would explain to Rose, Eponine, and Courfeyrac his ideas since they were younger and couldn't fully understand it. Marius supported Enjolras even though he had his doubts. Grantaire sat down next to Rose clumsily and listened to Enjolras' words. Rose could see the admiration Grantaire had for Enjolras and his bravery. Jehan meanwhile was talking to Marius about a poem that he had read. Marius seemed interested in the words of Jehan. Courfeyrac was poking his head out of the giant elephant and was looking at the streets of Paris.
''A new cafe has opened" said Courfeyrac. Enjolras joined the boy at the top of the elephant and looked at where Courfeyrac was pointing. He nodded his head and jumped back down.
''Courfeyrac, you and Jehan go look for new members" said Enjolras. Courfeyrac immediately jumped down and ran out with Jehan at his heals. Eponine and Rose were talking about a new doll that could be dressed and undressed. They were absolutely stunned by something like that and both could not wait to get their hands on it.
Enjolras opened the door and 5 boys came in. Courfeyrac and Jehan and three other boys.
"This is Joly, Combreferre, and Feuilly" spoke Jehan.
"General Le Marc gave us 10 francs" said Courfeyrac while taking the money out of his pocket. They distributed the money among themselves and each of them left for their own homes.
Marius and Rose walked together through the streets. Rose spotted Cosette's home and smiled. She would be back soon.
