"Are you certain that you're alright?" He asked after Rose had vomited for the fifth time that week.
"Yes, I am certain"
"You may have caught that damned illness from me" he muttered worriedly.
"It wasn't contagious. I am fine Javert I probably just ate something spoiled" she replied. Javert was holding back her hair as she knelt down on the giant bucket.
"I think I should call for Dr.Michel anyway" he murmured.
"It would be a waste of money and time. I am perfectly fine" she argued. He sighed and helped her up from the ground.
"I have to go to work. I hate to leave you when you're like this but I have missed so much already" he said sadly.
"I understand. It's alright, really" said Rose while shrugging. He pecked her on the forehead and placed his hat on his head. Rose smiled at him as he left. Once he was gone, Rose sat down and put her face in her hands. She was worried. What if she was pregnant? They weren't married and what would people say if they found out that Inspector Javert had slept with his slave. But what worried her even more was the possibility that Javert may leave her if he found out that she was pregnant. The first night was followed by several others and it dawned on Rose that she really could be pregnant. But Javert wasn't stupid. He must have known the circumstances. He couldn't possibly leave her when he was to blame too. There was a knock on the door and she wondered why Javert had come back so early. She opened the door and was greeted by the sight of Marius standing behind the door awkwardly. He grinned when he saw her and she threw herself on him.
"Why haven't you been coming you idiot?" She mumbled when they pulled away.
"Influenza as you have heard" he replied.
"Oh yes. I forgot" replied Rose quietly. She could never forgive Cosette for not telling her how Marius recovered. Javert could have died.
"I know about your fight with Cosette" he said.
"Then what are you doing here? Aren't you going to take her side?" She hissed.
"Well maybe you'd like to know that I am not taking her side. She was wrong to have reacted the way she did, but ever since her father died she had been so much more emotional. You must forgive her" he pleaded.
"She's forgiven and I would like to see her actually"
"Well she can't really come anytime soon" Marius told her.
"Why ever not?" She asked.
"I am a father to Eponine now" said Marius. His face cracked with the largest smile she had ever seen and she threw herself at him and hugged him tightly.
"Oh, I must see her. You will have to bring both Cosette and Eponine to visit soon" she gushed. Marius chuckled and nodded.
"Marius, what would you're reaction be if I told you that I was pregnant?" Asked Rose uncertainly.
"Well, I would be happy for you of course. Other people may not but you shouldn't care about what people say. Especially when your partner is someone who cares so little of what the people's opinions are of him. Are you really pregnant though?" He asked while scratching his head.
"I am not certain. I have been throwing up a lot lately and I am very worried Marius" she said quietly.
"Why are you worried?" He asked, concern visible on his young features.
"What if Javert leaves me?" She asked quietly.
"He won't" he replied shortly. He ran a hand through his already messy hair and got up. "It was nice seeing you dear sister but I need to leave now. Next time I'll come I'll be with Cosette and Eponine" he grinned at her one last time and patted her on the shoulder affectionately. He slammed the door shut and Rose was alone once more. Maybe she should just let Javert get Dr.Michel when he comes back. If she was pregnant then nothing she could do can change it.
--
Rose jumped up when she heard the door unlock. Javert walked in with his hat in his hands. He placed it on the table and hugged Rose quickly. He walked inside the bedroom and quickly changed into his nightshirt before returning to Rose and greeting her properly with a long kiss.
"Javert, do you think that you could call for Doctor Michel?" She asked uncertainly.
"Why? Did something happen?" He asked worriedly.
"No, I just want to be sure that I am fine" she lied quietly.
"I'll call for him" he assured her.
Not half an hour after Javert called for Dr.Michel, there was a knock on the door. Javert opened and nodded curtly at the man. Dr.Michel walked in the bedroom and slammed the door. Javert sat on the couch and closed his eyes. It seemed like forever when the door unlocked to reveal a very confused doctor.
"The slave is pregnant, inspector" he mumbled. Javert could have sworn that his heart stopped beating for a second.
"I believe I have already payed you, Doctor" he mumbled. Doctor Michel left and Javert went inside the bedroom. Rose was sitting on the bed and her eyes were full of unshed tears.
"I understand if you decide to leave me now. I could stay with Marius, I am going to be alright" she said quietly.
"Why on earth would I leave you when it is my child that you are carrying? It is mine right?" He asked while scratching his arm uncomfortably.
"Of course it's yours" she snapped.
"Then why would I leave you when I love you and our not yet born child?" He said while opening his arms wide. Rose ran into his outstretched arms and he hugged her tightly.
"Will you marry me?" He whispered into her ear.
"W-What?" She stammered.
"You heard me. Will you marry me?" He repeated.
"Yes. Of course yes!" She exclaimed. He pulled her into his arms once more and they stayed like that until they got tired.
The wedding was a small event with no guests whatsoever. They both chose not to tell anyone about their marriage. Even though it was small, they both considered it one of the happiest moments of their lives. They returned from the church with a carriage during which they repeated the words 'I love you' several times. They both couldn't be any happier with the knowledge that they both were tied together for eternity and that they both will be parents in just a matter of months.
