Javert was still in his kneeling position but his mouth was slightly open.

"What happened?" he asked.

"The first battle" she said. She was still on the verge of tears because of Eponine.

"Someone close to you died?" he asked knowingly. She nodded still holding back the tears.

"I am sorry" he said. She couldn't hold it back any longer. A sob shook her body and she cried silently.

"Hey, come here" Javert said sadly. She didn't completely trust him  but she felt like he understood. She walked slowly towards him and kneeled in front of him. She rested her head on his shoulder and wept until she felt better. She took her head off his shoulder and looked him in the eyes, while still kneeling in front of him only a few inches away from his face.

"If my hands were tied I would've held you" he said with a sorry smile.

"This is good enough. Thank you" she said.

"I want to get you out" she said. Her eyes looked sorry and he smiled reassuringly.

"No, I understand. I don't care anyway, if this is how I'll die then be it" he said sadly.

"Please don't say that" she said.

"Thank you for coming. It helps, Mademoiselle..." he trailed off and looked at her with confusion.

"Rose. My name is Rose, Inspector Javert. What's your first name?" she asked curiously.

"Alan. But don't call me that. My name is Javert" he told her.

"Well Javert I have to return. People will ask questions" she told him. She gave him an awkward smile and left.

"Bye bye Javert" she said while leaving

"Bye bye Rose" he whispered.

"Where were you?" asked Grantaire once she had returned.

"I was sitting on a street somewhere behind the cafe. I didn't want to see Eponine die" she lied.

"Your brother is very upset" said Grantaire.

"He must be. She told him that she loved him?" she asked him. Grantaire nodded sadly. Rose sighed and was just about to answer when a man dressed in a police uniform presented himself in front of the barricade. It took her a moment to realize that it was Cosette's father.

"Don't shoot" he said quickly. "I come here as a volunteer"

"You see that man, a volunteer like you. He calls himself Javert" said Courfeyrac while leading Cosette's father to where Javert was.

"Don't shoot him I know him" said Rose.

He glanced at her and gave her grateful look.

"On the roof!" he shouted. Enjolras shot the man who was on the roof and looked gratefully at him.

"Thank you Monsieur..." he trailed off.

"Call me Fauchlevant" said Fauchlevant.  Rose never knee his name until now although they had met several times.

"Don't thank me, there's something you could do" said Fauchlevant

"If it is in my power" said Enjolras with a shrug.

"Give me the spy Javert. Let me take care of him" said Fauchlevant. Gavroche handed him a gun.

"Do what you have to do. The man belongs to you" said Enjolras while handing him a knife. Rose could've sworn that her heart stopped beating for a moment. They surly couldn't kill Javert, could they? He didn't deserve to die this way. Tears welled up in her eyes and she ran away to a spot behind the barricade so no one could see her. Moments later a gunshot was heard and she had to use all her strength to not let out a sob. Fauchlevant came out and nodded at Enjolras. Rose didn't look up when he came and sat next to her.

"He lives" said Fauchlevant

"W-what?" stammered Rose.

"I freed him" he said

"Thank you. You are a truly an amazing man" she said with a small laugh. Her tears stopped and she wiped her face with the sleeve of her dress.

"He told me to tell you that he thanks you. He told me to protect you" said Fauchlevant.  Rose smiled and leaned against the wall. If she lives she will meet Javert once again. And that was a promise.
