The Prisoner

Chapter 42

"What's wrong with him maman?" Lilith asked quietly.
"Is he sick?" Hugo asked.
"No, no, he just wants to be alone for a little while. Don't worry" Rose assured them hesitantly.
"You're lying, Maman" said Pierre with tears streaming down his face.
"I don't know alright. I don't know what's wrong with him!" shouted Rose with tears in her eyes. Hugo hugged her tightly and soon Lilith and Pierre joined in the hug.
"I am going to go check on him" said Rose while wiping her eyes. She ascended the stairs and opened the door to their bedroom. Javert hadn't changed his position, he was still lying on the bed with his face pressed into the pillow.
"Javert?" She called while closing the door shut behind her. She sat down on the bed and put her hand on the back of his head softly. "Javert please answer me. Please. Please tell me what's wrong. Are you ill? Tell me anything to tell the kids. They're so worried, Javert. Tell me you're alright" she sobbed. Her hand was fisted into his hair as she tried desperately to pull his head away from the pillow.
"Look at me! Look at me" she sobbed. Slowly, as if he were a puppet, his head turned and he was looking at her. Drying tear trails were on his cheeks and Rose gasped. Never had she seen him cry.

"What's wrong, darling?" She asked him while cupping his cheek. Javert looked at Rose but said nothing. "Please tell me"

"I don't know what's wrong with me" he croaked.

"Are you ill?" She asked him while stroking his hair. He shook his head and tears welled up in his eyes.

"Is there something wrong at work?" She tried again. He shook his head again and let out a shaky breath.

"Then what's wrong?" He shrugged and put his head in her lap. Rose stayed silent as she stroked his grey hair.

"Will you always love me?" He asked softly.

"Until I die" she replied automatically. He buried his head into her thigh and let out a sob.

"Oh, Javert" she whispered while leaning down to kiss the top of his head.

"I love you" he sobbed.

"I love you too" she said softly. Tears were streaming down both of their faces. Javert sat up and instantly Rose hugged him.

"I am here" she whispered into his ear. He put his head onto her shoulder and exhaled softly.

"You're here" he breathed.

"The kids are worried" she whispered. He nodded and held onto Rose tighter.

"You are the reason I am here today" he whispered.

"You are the reason I am here today" she repeated what he had said. "You've been in here for two days, Javert. I felt like I was going to die without you, my love"

"I never thought anyone would tell me these words"

"But you deserve to hear them. I love you. Never forget that. Never. Promise me you'll always be here for me, Javert. I can't live without you" she had started crying again.

"Just hold me for a while" he whispered softly. Rose did nothing but hug him tighter to her.

I have no idea where that came from. I was listening to the soundtrack of A Beautiful Mind while writing this. If you haven't watched A Beautiful Mind or if you haven't listened to the soundtrack go do it now. It is honestly the best love story ever and one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack is perfection. So anyway I had an urge to write an angsty chapter so this was the result. Oh and prisoner has hit 2k!!
