Zuko walked down the hall, he made it out of the Fire Lord's room and he intended to get back to the throne room where he knew all the others would be. For the first time in a long time he felt his heart ready to burst from anger.
He was so close to making the family he and Iris wanted. But no. Fate was a bitch. It always had to be for both of them. Both of them wanted nothing but to be happy with their family. But fate was always paying them with the same side of the coin.
Sokka had told him that it was his father according to June and his sister. His father. A monster. That's what he was. What kind of a man would cause the death of his own grandchild before it even gets the chance to be born?
Only a monster would do that.
He would chase him down. He would find him and he would kill him with his own hands. Just like Aang should've done a long time ago.
Zuko sighed heavily wiping the last traces of tears from his eyes. He would either cry or set the entire Palace on fire. He didn't attend the funeral. He couldn't bear to see the tomb of his own child.
He stopped at the sound of a familiar voice coming from the library. Iris?
"Don't do this to me, Sokka... please, don't. I don't deserve this. I'm keeping you from your own child, Sokka... our daughter-"
Zuko's eyes widened. I must be mistaken. It couldn't be Iris's voice. He pushed the half opened door to take a look. It was indeed Iris and Sokka. He'd never seen them so close before. His fingers tightened to grips, he gritted his teeth.
No, no, no, no, no...
"You hid her there, didn't you? Our daughter... in the Nadilva Tribe. The Chief said that he's your father,"
Zuko made a step back. Eyes widened in shock. His back touched the wall. His heart pounded loud in his ears. Louder than any other sound around him. He took a deep breath as quiet as possible.
Iris took her gaze away from him "It's true. He promised that he'd keep her safe and I trust him. We've got the same blood running in our veins, he's my father, Sokka,"
"He tried to kill us,"
"He was protecting her! Don't go back there. They're not the ones we should be fighting,"
Zuko gritted his teeth tightly that his jaw ached. He couldn't scream but he wanted to. But he also knew that he'd hurt Iris if he'd do that. Iris... He thought angrily.
What were they talking about?
A daughter?
A hidden child...
THEIR hidden child.
Zuko didn't get the chance to think about it when he heard footsteps. He couldn't let them know that he found out. He entered a nearby guest room immediately and he waited until Sokka walked away. Iris would stay in the library, he guessed.
Zuko sighed heavily. His head fell back on the door and he shut his eyes tightly.
How could she do that?
Why didn't she at least tell me?
The thoughts circled around his mind. It made his head ache unbearably. No. As much as he tried to convince himself that Iris would never do that to him. That she'd never hurt him like that... he'd heard with his own ears and seen them in each other's arms with his own eyes.
