After experiencing such bizarre human behavior at the theater, I try to pay attention in biology. Science is the only thing that can explain the insanity that is my life. We are studying ecosystems, a term that refers to survival and harmony within groups of living things. According to the concept of ecological niches, every organism is here for a reason. Must be a myth. How would you explain foster kids?
Biology is rock hard. You don't have to dig through layers of information to find what you're looking for. Plus, mediocrity is acceptable because the scientists of the world figured out this crap before us. The science classroom looks like a nail salon, with orderly rows of lab tables and stools that squeak when you spin them. Electrical test tubes bubble in the corner. Microscopes are lined up in rows on the back counter.
While Mr. Gowda blathers about the difference between a population and a community, I bite my pencil and look at my world through a scientist's eyes. Ecosystem-style. Three organisms were living in harmony with perfectly functional ecological niches, and then the imported species came along and screwed everything up.
Or there's food chains. Why do we only learn about animal food chains? The human food chain is one of the most scientifically baffling phenomenons in existence. No one studies it, but it is implicitly understood by everyone. People like the Mirandas are at the top. People like Mr. Gowda (MIT reject) are in the middle. And people like me? Kerplunk. Sploosh. Welcome to rock bottom.
There should be another class. The science of humans. Humanology. There's something I would be interested in learning about. I wish I knew how other people were wired. Then everyone wouldn't seem so outlandish. Outlandish— three-point vocab word. Ms. Rishanki would be proud.
Science is cool. Too bad I don't care enough to study.
