Chapter 8

"Explain being a faerie to me." I demanded of Keghan. I was standing in his living room, my hand on my hips, looking defiantly up at him.

Keghan sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He looked down at me, his lips partially open, and let out a long sigh. I blushed and looked away, thinking about how his lips felt.

I peeked back up at him and he was pacing. "What do you want to know?" He asked finally.

"Why did you take my dad?"

"He was a traitor."

I laughed ruefully. "Well if I was him I would want to get the hell out of dodge too."

Keghan frowned. "Dodge?"

I groaned, not wanting to explain. "Look it up."

"I don't under-"

"How was he a traitor?" I cut Keghan off and annoyance flickered across his face before he answered.

"He was in love with your mother."

"Stop giving me these short answers that just raise more questions!" I blinked up at Keghan, and then threw up my hands.

"Sorry?" He said.

"Whatever. If you're just going to give me these terrible answers then I'm just going to leave." I said, already starting toward the door.

"No Kensley, wait. Don't leave. It's just, I'm used to speaking a little amount. Gosh this is hard to explain."

"I don't care. I don't want to listen to your excuses and lies."

"See that's the thing, I can't lie. No Fae can. Instead we stretch the truth as far as it can go. So by answering in short, and to the point answers, it's less work for me."

"Oh." I murmered, staring at the ground to hide my flaming cheeks.

"So your father left the faerie world to be with your mother. And at first when he had one child the Fae were going to let him back, but then he had another kid, you Kensley. And then we came for him, we didn't know about you at the time, about you being a girl half-fae but when we saw you we wanted you, and I was sent after you." He shifted uncomfortably. "We didn't know about Mike when we took your father."

"Bull." I said from my perch on the couch.

"But Kens you have to understand. He broke the laws."

"So love isn't a thing in your world. You can't love anyone?" My voice cracked remembering how he told me he loved me.

"We can love people Kensley. It's just, not humans we aren't allowed to love humans."

I swallowed the lump in my throat and whispered, "can you still love me?"

Keghan's eyes shot over to me and he sat down next to me. He rubbed a hand over my back slowly. "Of course I can. But your father was exiled after he had Adam, so when he had you He crossed another line, and we didn't take it lightly. I'm sorry Kens."

I shrugged. leaning into his touch. "It's okay. It's just I miss him every day."

He sighed. "I want to tell you it gets better, but it doesn't, you'll always miss him, no matter what."
