Chapter 2

When I got to the grocery store, I walked straight to the bread section and grabbed some wheat bread. I then walked over to the cereal and looked through the store brand cereals.

“Fancy seeing you here.”

I turned around and saw Jake standing there with a smirk on his face.

“Hey Jake.” I said, chucking the cereal in the cart.

“So, what brings you here?” he asked, walking beside the cart with me.

“Grocery shopping, obviously.”

“Ha yeah, obviously.” he said awkwardly. “Well, I’m here because I need a make up present.”

I looked at him curiously. “Who are you sucking up to?”

He sighed. “Nicole. she’s convinced that I’m cheating on her, which I’m not. I would never do that.”

“Try getting her something expensive. I’m sure she would like that.”

He scrunched his eyebrows in confusion. “Is that what you like?”

I scoffed. “No, I could care less what a guy gets me. I would prefer a guy didn’t get me anything, so then I don’t feel bad. She’s always been the kind of a girl who likes expensive things, is what I meant.”

“So, are you ever going to tell me where you’ve been for 3 years?” he asked suddenly.

I shrugged. “You should know, you were the one who told me you knew I didn’t leave town.”

“Did something happen that made you want to leave school and everyone?” he asked, concern in his eyes.

I rolled my eyes. “Liz was right, you haven’t changed personality wise.”

“You’re avoiding my question, which makes me think something did happen that caused you to runaway.”

I groaned. “Why the hell does it matter, I’m here now!” I snapped.

“Ok, ok, sorry. I can take a hint.”

We were now at the checkout counter; the lady quickly scanned my groceries. “38.50” she said.

I mentally groaned, when I realized I didn't have enough money. “I guess just take the cereal off.” I said.

A 10 dollar bill then went into my vision.

“Keep the cereal on.” Jake told the lady.

I widened my eyes in shock. “You don’t have to do that Jake.”

“Consider it a welcome back gift.” he said.

I sighed and gave the 20 to the cashier. I grabbed my groceries and change and walked out the store, Jake following me.

“Thanks Jake, I’ll pay you back I swear.”

He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly . “No big deal, you don’t have to.”

“Well, I better get going home, thanks again Jake.”

He smiled. “You’re welcome, see you at school tomorrow.”

When I got home, my mom was thankfully passed out on the couch, so she won’t ask why I didn’t bring beer or any other kind of alcohol.
