Chapter 3
The next morning ,I woke up at 4 wide awake, like always. I have no idea why, but every morning, no matter how hard I try, I always wake up some time in the middle of the night. wide awake. Since I didn’t have to be up for 2 hours I decided to go to the park that was a block away.
When I got to the deserted park, I instantly walked over to the swings and sat down, lightly pushing my self.
I usually come to the park to think, don’t ask me why i choose the park. I guess it has to do with the fact that the park is where I use to always play at when I was younger.
I was sitting there for a half an hour, when I heard someone call my name, I looked up. My breath caught in my throat. Running towards me was Jake. He was wearing a tight grey t-shirt that had some sweat spots on his chest and back, he must have been taking a jog. He was also wearing black sweatpants that hung low on his hips.
When he finally got to me, he was out of breath, as if he just got done running a mile, which he probably did considering how sweaty he is and what he’s wearing.
“Jake, what are you doing here?” I finally asked.
“Taking my morning jog, like always. What about you?” he asked.
I shrugged. “Couldn’t sleep, so I just came here to pass the time.”
“Mind if I join you?”
I shrugged. “It’s not like I can say no.”
He smiled and sat down on the swing beside me. “So couldn’t sleep huh?”
“Nope.” I said, popping the p.
“How long were you planning on staying here?”
I shrugged. “Till 6 I guess.”
“Mind if I stay here with you till then?”
“Like I said before Jake, it’s not like I can say no.”
We sat in silence for a few minutes until Jake broke the silence. “I really did miss you, Abby.”
I blushed. “T-thanks, I guess I missed you to.”
“You guess?” he teased.
“I guess I just missed being a normal teenager again.” I blurted, making my eyes widened.
He looked at me with a curious look on his face. “What do you mean?” he asked.
I shook my head quickly. “Just forget I said anything.”
He sighed, dropping the subject. “I wish you would stop hiding things from me, I know something had to of happened to made you hide from everyone. you know you can tell me anything, right?”
I turned and looked him in the eyes, and gave him a small smile. “Yeah, I know. and I appreciate that. But there’s just something’s that are meant to be kept a secret.”
He looked at me with a look of concern. “No one’s hurting you right?” he asked.
I snorted. “No Jake, no one’s hurting me. I can promise you that.”
He sighed of relief. “I meant what I said though, Abby, you can tell me anything; if you ever change your mind, please call me.”
I nodded. I doubt I will ever tell him though. How can someone just burst out how their dad walked out on them and their mom became an alcoholic because of it.
I looked at the clock on my phone and saw it was 6:10. “I better get ready for school.” I said quietly.
He nodded. We both got up from the swings. He turned to me and held his arms out signaling he wanted a hug. I smiled and wrapped my arms around him giving him a hug. I couldn’t help how safe I felt in his arms, making me not want to get out of them.
“See you at school.” he said.
I smiled and started to walk home.
When I got home, I decided to check on my mom. When I went to her room, I was shocked to see she was still sleeping. Usually by now she would be having her first beer or puking her guts out.
I slowly walked over to her and fixed her covers. When I started to walk back to my room, I stepped on something round. I looked down and widened my eyes. There on the ground, was an empty bottle of sleeping pills. I quickly walked over to my mom, the feeling of panic rising. I began shaking her.
“Mom, mom!” I yelled. Tears started streaming down my face when she didn’t respond; she didn’t even look like she was breathing.
I quickly ran to my room and grabbed my phone and dialed 911. When I got off the phone with the dispatcher, I quickly ran back to her room.
“Mom, please, please, please, wake up!” I begged.
Few minutes later the ambulance arrived. They were able to revive her right away thankfully, but she was still unconscious and she wasn’t out of danger yet. The EMT’s quickly asked some questions about her. Like if she had history of depression, if she’s ever tried this before. And if she was on any medication.
When they finally took her away in the ambulance, I quickly jumped in my car and drove to the hospital forgetting all about school.
