Chapter 4
I was sitting in the hard blue chairs for hours, when the doctor finally came out of the room. He slowly walked over to me and sat down beside me, giving me a sorrowful look, which scared me.
"H-how is she?" I asked, fearing the answer.
He sighed. "She's stable at the moment. but I'm sorry to tell you this, she's brain dead. She went to long with out oxygen, which caused her brain to stop working."
"b-but you said she was stable!"
"she is, with machine's."
I just stared at him, blinking; I cannot believe he is trying to tell me that my mom is brain dead, a vegetable.
"Has your mom ever talked about her will, does she have one?"
I shook my head no, feeling to numb to say anything else.
"Did she ever talk about what she would want to happen, if she was ever kept alive by machines?"
I sighed. "No, she's never said anything like that."
The doctor sighed. "I would hate to put this decision on you, since you're only 17, but we have no choice, since you're the only family member she seems to have." He took a deep breath. "You need to decide whether you want to keep her on the machines, or to take them off and let nature run it's course."
I gave him a look of disbelief. "You're actually making me make that decision?"
"I'm sorry ma'am. If it helps your decision at all, she's not going to get any better ever, she will be in this state for the rest of her life, if you choose to keep the machines."
Tears weld in my eyes. "I-I don't know, I need to talk this over with my brother." I whispered.
He nodded. "Of course, there's no hurry; this is a hard decision to make." He got up and walked away, leaving me there to numb to even think.
My phone started to ring, jumping me out of my numb and emotionless state. I sighed and flipped my phone open. "Hello." I said, hating how emotionless I sounded.
"Abby, Is everything ok? I didn't see you at school today." he asked, sounding concerned.
I sighed. "No, everything's not ok."
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Tears welded in my eyes again. "my moms in the hospital right now, I guess she's brain dead. the doctors are asking me to chose between, letting her die or keeping her alive with machines, I cant get a hold of my brother because he's in a stupid meeting, I'm here by myself, and I don't know what to do." I said quickly, sobbing by the time I was done talking
"I'll be there in a few minutes." he said quickly.
My eyes widened. "You don't have to come here, Jake."
"No, but I want to. You obviously need someone; I told you this morning that if you ever need someone I'm here." He hung up before I could even protest.
