Diane

You know what's so great about waking up in the morning?

It's that you'll never know what's gonna happen next.

I didn't expect anything great at six o'clock on my way to the bookstore. But maybe that's why I love life. You can't expect anything that's too unexpected because it will be expected then nothing will be unexpected.

Sometimes I don't make any sense. But then again, nothing in this world makes sense. And nothing should.

So at six-thirty, I was in the bookstore, looking for Mr. Hanes. He's this old man who lives on the farther side of town. But because he owns the store, he still has to come here to watch over it. His granddaughter was the original owner. It was until she passed away that he decided to honor her by watching over the bookstore that she was really fond of.

I heard something fell in the far corner of the room. I flinched at the sound and was scared for a second but I had the right ounce of courage walk slowly towards it.

Like life, I don't know what's waiting out there—literally.

But then I saw the old man by the ladder, throwing book after book on the floor. I felt the relief flood through my chest and let out a sigh and then a smile.

"Mr. Hanes?" I called softly.

The man turned and narrowed his eyes at me. Then, I think, his vision cleared and nodded at me. "Howdy there, Diane,” he greets. “Now don’t go on sneaking up on an old man like me,” he says.
