Epilogue

I didn’t think that being married would feel like this. You have commitment and yet you also have freedom.

I’m with him and I’m complete and I couldn’t be happier.

We got off from Paris a week earlier and we went back to New York just to pick things up and settle everything. Steven was fixing his resignation with mine as I was sitting in a coffee shop nearby.

Then I saw someone from my past.

He saw me, too and came near. “Hey, how are you?” I stood up to give him a quick hug.

“I’m fine, you?”

He shrugged. “Same,” and the silence got eerie then he picked up the line again. “Where’s…where’s Steven?”

“Oh, he’s at the office, doing last minute paper works.” I gestured for him to sit across me. “So, update me, Albright.”

“I’m back to teaching.” He says as he sits down.

“Congratulations!” I laughed and added, “Maybe teaching is really for you.”

“I figured that out.” He laughed, too. “Anyways, where had you been? There were here-says that you went to Barcelona?”

“Paris,” I corrected. “And I’m headed to London, with Steven, of course.”

“Permanently…?” He asked and I nodded. “Wow. Good luck.”

“I know we’ll need it.” I agreed then he leaned forward. “What?”

“You have to buy a really tiny car for a good parking space.” And I laughed at that. We talked some more before he finally said goodbye.

A week later, by Halloween, we were packing up and ready to leave when an unexpected visitor knocked on our door.

It was Bryan again and this time, he’s not up for small talks.

“What is it?” Steven asked politely and he was panting and I don’t know why. Did he run here?

“I don’t think you can leave just yet.” He tells me and only me.

“Why…?” I whispered, afraid to ask.

Bryan looked at Steven then back at me. “She’s here.”

And Steven and I asked in synchronization. “Who is?”

The man I once knew just stared at me and I felt something that was coming—something I had not anticipated. “Your mother…” He replied. “Your mother’s in New York, Diane. And she’s looking for you.”

I bargained there to be silence. But I couldn't help it.

"Oh, shoot."
