5 years later
My husband and the guys stopped visiting me 3 years ago. They couldn't even last... Thankfully, my brother and mother-in-law brought Mia to see me every weekend. She was who I missed the most. Her life was most valuable to me, and it broke my heart that I was missing these pivotal moments of her life.
She didn't blame me though. I explained my situation to her and she understood. She was old enough to know why mommy couldn't come home. Initially, she cried for me, then it turned to anger towards anyone who spoke ill of me. In her eyes, I was her hero. The relationship between my mother and Mia was strained, because my mother now had it out for me so, Mia was staying with Yoongi's parents when he was busy with work.
Prison in South Korea was not nearly as hostile as it was in America. I was targeted quite a few times being the only black Queen in the entire prison system, but the Lord sent a friend for me: the lovely widowed, Bak Anabelle. She was 40 years my senior, but she's been my only true friend these past 5 years.
A prison guard named Park Hanbin took special care of me. He later told me Judge Sul directly assigned him to me.
He heard about my case; I mean, who didn't; but he knew details that even the jurors didn't know. "Museun il-i iss-eossneunji eotteohge al su issni? (How do you know so much about what happened?)"
Hanbin glanced around the corner of the laundry room, as Anabelle and I were on laundry duty today, and sighed as the coast was clear. "Naneun eonniga iss-eoss-eo. Neohui dul-eun manh-eunmyeon-eseo biseushae. (I had a sister... You two are similar in a lot of ways...)" I instantly regretted questioning him once his eyes started to water. "That scum did the same thing to her."
It didn't take a detective to know he was referring to Lee Minho. I've come to know that when Hanbin gets mad he switches to his Australian accent. "And he got away with it, I presume?" Anabelle questioned him next. She knew every detail of the case as she has been my confidant since day 1.
Lady Anabelle comes from old money so, she was forced to learn English, among many languages, as a child. She was in jail for the murder of her husband. He almost succeeded in killing her, but she fought back, which ended in his death. It was self-defense, but murder was dealt with harsher back then. She's been in jail going on 30 years now.
"Money can corrupt even the purest of hearts." Hanbin looked at us briefly before focusing on the wall just above our heads. "He was found not guilty, and somehow my sister's name was leaked to the public. These girls...."
That got my attention and dread filled my being. "Did they have a scorpion tattoo on their wrists?"
Hanbin met my eyes, and he nodded. "They did... They harassed my sister to the point of her taking her own life."
"I'm sorry... ("Joesonghaeyo...)" I whispered, feeling his sister's pain hit me like a freight train.
He offered me a little small smile and shocked me with his next words. "...which is why I've taken it upon myself to help you... Haneul would've wanted that..."
We heard footsteps coming down the hall to where we were. Lo and behold, ex-officer Jung waltz in looking pissed. Actually, that's been her look ever since she was fired. I warned her that she would be in prison before me, and once the police department found out she and the other 2 unnamed officers set me up to be killed, they were terminated and imprisoned.
"Geulsse, eum, goyang-iga mueos-eul kkeul-eo wassneunjiboseyo. (Well, well, well... look what the cat dragged in.)" She and her crew of 2 circled me, oblivious to Hanbin watching in the corner. I ignored her and finished my job duties for the day. "Ya! Naneun neoege malhagoiss-eo! (I'm talking to you!)"
