There’s a lot of texting towards the end, I made the text messages in bold italics to make it easier.

I woke up early the next morning to head back to Boston for the day to spend some time with Bridget on her 37th birthday.  It was the first time in 8 years that I was able to make it home to spend the day with her, so the four hour drive each way to spend about 8 hours with her was worth it to me.  I had a 90s R&B station on Sirius radio and had been jamming out to Next’s “Too Close” and getting weird looks from my dog, as well as the drivers around me, but I didn’t care. Then I heard a soft piano start playing.

My shattered dreams and broken heart

Are mending on the shelf

I saw you holding hands

Standing close to someone else

Now I sit all alone

Wishing all my feelings was gone

I gave my best to you

Nothing for me to do

But have one last cry

One last cry

Before I leave it all behind

I gotta put you out of my mind this time

Stop living a lie

I guess I’m down to my last cry

“Fuck you, Brian McKnight.” I said out loud as I wiped the tears from my cheeks.

Gotta get over you

Nothing for me to do

But have one last cry

“He’s right, isn’t he, Sir Floof?” I asked and Sir Floof lifted his head from the seat next to me and gave me a happy bark. “Yeah, it’s time to move on.”

I pulled up to her house at around 11 and let Sir Floof out ahead of me as I made my way up to her door. I was about to ring the bell when the door opened and I saw Ian standing there in his police uniform.

"God damn it, did I miss the birthday stripper?" I asked.

“Nah, she’ll get that tonight,” he said with a smirk. “I’m gonna be on patrol today, so you two stay out of trouble or I’ll hear about it.”

“You know I can’t promise you that, Ian.” I told him.

“Oh you could at least lie to me, Maddie!” Ian laughed.

“Isn’t it illegal to lie to an officer in uniform?” I asked.

“I’d let it slide.” He told me. “I gotta run though, will you be here when I get off tonight?”

“I’ll be heading back at like 7, we’ve got the show tomorrow. Otherwise I would have just stayed through the weekend.” I explained.

“Ok, I’ll see you next time then, B is upstairs finishing getting ready,” Ian told me, giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Later, Maddie.”

“See ya Ian!” I called after him as he made his way to his cruiser.

I headed into the house with Sir Floof and let him off the leash to go explore as I started up the stairs. I made my way into the master bedroom and leaned against the bathroom door watching my sister finish her makeup.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY BITCH!!” I yelled as soon as Bridget tossed her mascara back into her makeup bag.

Bridget jumped about three feet and knocked over the lotions that were on top of the counter. “Maddie you fucking asshole!!”
