"What do you mean, you're leaving?"
Charles' eyebrows furrowed, misery draping over him at the news. Kurt sighed. "It's a summer camp thing. My mom's sending me there.", he grumbled. "Why?", the mermaid asked sadly. "I said something I shouldn't have.", Kurt explained in a mumble. "What? What'd you say that would take you away from home?", Charles asked, his fins swerving back. "I'd rather not talk about it.", the human remarked, shifting a little. Charles gave a light sigh as Kurt took out his phone.
"What's that?", he asked, surveying the device. "It's a phone. When people are far away, they use one of these to talk to each other, or research something they don't know about", Kurt explained, "I use it for music."
"Music?", Charles beamed. Kurt nodded, "Yeah, all sorts of stuff". The mermaid smiled excitedly, "Can I listen to some of the stuff on land?". "Sure, What genre do you like?", Kurt asked. Charles thought for a moment. "Guess.", he remarked.
Within about a minute, a soft and raspy yell started playing, making Charles' fins swerve back as he eyed his friend, bewildered in a sense. Kurt held back a snicker, entertained by how fascinated his friend was.You twist my arm
I'm twisting fate
You'll leave alone, or crazy great
Or break into a million pieces, all your reasonsLets live alone
And out of state
Lets make up everything and wake up breathing
Don't give a damn about the wreck you leave in...Charles cracked a smile. The song had an old, sweet feel to it. It felt like the symphony of a cozy home. He looked up at Kurt, who was tapping his foot lightly in the sand.
...You don't understand, we don't hold hands
Come catch me, run
Cuz I'm not having any fun
I think you're sore
I think I'm done
A million reasonsCan I be your number one?
"I'm guessing that you liked it.", Kurt said, beginning to take something out of his hoodie pocket. "Well, since I'll be gone for like, a billion years, I feel like I should give you something to remind you of me.", he said sadly, a hint of raspiness in his voice. Charles took a shell from his shirt pocket. "Stay strong, okay? If not for yourself, then for me.", he pleaded softly. Kurt handed the present to his friend, taking the chipped, white shell. "I will.", Kurt whispered, mustering a weak smile. Charles smiled back, opening his gift.

Leo handed Charles a badge. "While you were doing were doing who knows what, I got us summer jobs as harvesters.", he beamed, despite the grudge he obviously held. "Thanks.", Charles spoke, putting his gift on a shelf. "I hope you're being safe out there.", Leo cautioned. "I am," he reassured, "Kurt's a nice guy.", he reassured, putting his badge away. "Where's Mom?"
"Cleaning up the bodies over near Poside.", Leo replied, getting into his hammock. "Still?", Charles asked, "They must've hit the jackpot." Leo hinted a confident smirk, "Four carriers."
"Impressive.", Charles nodded, getting into his hammock. He put the gift on his dresser and curled up a little. "Good night.", he whispered tiredly.
"Night."
