Charles had never known fame before the next day at school.
"Dear Marina! A human!"
"Was it mean?"
"What did it look like?"
He was a celebrity, at least in his head. It was a good life, at least for a few class periods.
"Why are you telling everyone about this?", Leo hissed. "It's a historical event. I feel like this could kick off my career.", Charles explained. Leo sighed. "You're actually going for this, huh?", he asked. Charles messed with his shirt collar. "What's so wrong about wanting to be different?", he retorted.
"This isn't just success, Charles. This is life and death."
"Life's short, anyways. I might as well make something of it.", the determined mermaid insisted. "You're stubborn. You know that, right?", Leo said, crossing his arms. Charles snapped out of his thoughts. "Huh?", he asked.
"I said you were stubborn."
"Maybe.", Charles admitted, "but at least it's actually getting me somewhere.".
Leo didn't talk to Charles much after that. He'd say 'good morning' or something just to be polite, but almost everyone could tell that Leo wouldn't be able to shake his friend's words. Although Charles knew that he had reopened a wound, he couldn't take back what he said.
A few months passed, and the grey eyed boy came to the shore more frequently. "I've been thinking, and I have a hypothesis.",Kurt said one night, "I think you're just as sick as me. Not as in you're having my issues, but you don't seem normal." Charles nodded, his eyebrows slightly furrowed as he focused. He was fond of every aspect of his new human friend. "You don't seem normal, at least physically.", the mermaid replied, his eyes glancing over Kurt's body. "What do you mean?", Kurt asked. Charles paused for a moment, then shook his head. "Never mind. Anyways, what were you going on about, your hypothesis and all?", he asked. Kurt took out a small white bottle from his pocket and a tiny bottle of water. He twisted the cap off and took out two pills. The human walked closer to Charles.
"Take these."
"What are they?", Charles asked. "A dose of Atomoxetine. It helps kids who are too active and can't focus, or whatever.", Kurt explained, "I was thinking that it would help you focus." The mermaid held the two pills. "How do they taste?", he asked. "I don't know. I've never tried it, but if it's gross, you can just chug down some water.", the human offered with a shrug. "Thanks.", Charles said, taking the pills, quickly followed by a gulp of water.
"I hope this works."
