MAE'S FEET WERE KILLING her by the time the last of the brunch rush customers was served. Casey warned her that things can get crazy busy at the cafe on certain days, but not this crazy!
"Ano, kaya pa?" one of the other new hires, Lizzie, asked when she saw her taking a breather in the back.
"Kaya pa," Mae smiled at the newbie that was hired just a couple of weeks ago. In fact, she was here when Casey sat down to interview Lizzie and her sister, Eliza, who walked in to the cafe and applied for jobs. "Ganito ba lagi ka-busy dito?"
"Pretty much," Lizzie nodded. "I was a bit overwhelmed when I started kasi hindi ko expect na super dami ng customers especially first thing in the morning."
"I think sabi ni Casey eh hindi usually busy ang morning shift dito sa cafe, but I think she lied," Mae chuckled.
Lizzie chuckled with her. "Nah, I don't think she lied, per se. Sabi nung ibang servers eh since Alex Valdez first made an impromptu appearance dito sa cafe eh biglang dumami ang mga patrons bigla. As in everyday daw eh halos dito na mag-camp yung mga fans niya."
Mae believed her. She saw proof of Alex's pull on Cool Brews patrons the few times she came over to volunteer sans Alex. But she was usually here in the afternoons or evenings; she was never here in the morning so today was a bit of a shock for her to see the cafe's line-up all the way out the door.
"He did drew in CB's much needed crowd to help up the sales after the bombing incident," Mae nodded, then remembered that Lizzie was also at the cafe that day. "You were here that day too, right? Were you hurt that day?"
Lizzie stiffened at the unexpected question. "H-huh?"
"I was here that day, kaso nasa likod ako visiting Casey," she didn't bother including the part about Alex being there as well since she didn't want to come off as someone dropping names to make herself look and sound cool. "We were watching sa CCTV just before the bomb went off. I remember seeing you here kasi napansin lang namin na maraming umaligid-ligid sa table ninyo nung kasama mo that day," she explained.
"Oo naman. Eliza and I were fine. Minor bruises lang ang na-suffer namin, nothing major," Lizzie answered.
"That's good. Kasi in the chaos that ensued eh I don't remember seeing you or Eliza being tended by the paramedics when they arrived."
"Eliza and I were fortunate enough to escape unscathed and before complete mayhem descended the cafe."
"Smart move," Mae chuckled then jumped when she felt her cell phone buzz inside her half-apron pocket. She fished it out and frowned when she saw the name that appeared on her screen. "Teka lang, ha? Gotta take this," sabi niya.
"Sige, balik na rin ako sa labas and prepare for lunch," Lizzie said and walked out of the back end.
