Chapter four

Chapter 4

Daya woke up at the sound of her alarm at nine a.m. the next day, she got out of bed and went down to make a cereal then came back up to check her email. She saw an email from Tammy which basically said her job description was too vacuum the three living rooms, dust the shelves and clean the main bedroom which she had to do first. She got ready and got to the house at exactly eleven a.m., she was handed a uniform by the head maid and was directed to the maid changing room. She put on her uniform which fit perfectly, her uniform was a black shirt with a knee length skirt that had a black trouser alternative, she knew she would wear almost only the trouser. She got out of the changing room and was re-briefed of her duties then directed to the main bedroom by the head maid.

She knocked on the door and a voice from inside asked

"who the fuck is that!!?"

"Good morning, I am the new maid." she replied

"and you don't have a name?" he said

"oh, I am sorry, my name is Daya." She replied

"well Daya I am not in the mood for company so come back after lunch." He said

"ok sir." She replied

As she was about to start dusting the first living room the head maid approached her and apologized for his behaviour saying, "He is always like this, you would get used to it". Daya responded "thank you, I hope so". She dusted everything in the room till it was time for lunch where she met the two other maids and one manservant. She introduced herself then everyone introduced themselves politely, the head maid was called Mara, the other maids were called Samantha and Olivia while the manservant was called Tom. They were other workers walking around but they weren't paying attention to the maids. Lunch was for one hour and they were served a small list of options consisting of sandwiches, biscuits, chicken wings, some sort of rice, pizza and ribs. Daya fixed herself a plate then her and the other maids and manservant properly introduced themselves.

Mara had worked here for about five years and is a single mother to a five-year-old child with a deadbeat dad, she got the job a year after high school after getting pregnant for her high school boyfriend who lost it and broke up with her when he heard the news. She is just twenty-three years old and is saving up to go to university to study accounting, she said she would quit when she gets enough money to pay for her four years in university, she had enough for about two and a half years because of rent and other living expenses, she planned to work there for two more years hopefully and she earns thirty five dollars an hour and works six hours a day, six days a week. Olivia and Samantha were college roommates, who have been best friend since high school, they were in their third year studying. Olivia was studying fine arts and film to become a director and Samantha was studying English language to become a writer and an editor. They have been working here for two years now and where working to pay off their student loans and pay rent. They are twenty-two years old. Tom is an aspiring musician who works to pay rent for the mean time, he is nineteen and has been working here since he finished high school a year ago. He shared his music with Daya and she actually liked it and added it to her playlist. Daya told them she just moved here about a year ago and had already finished university back in Nigeria where she studied computer science, she told them she was twenty-two years old and was working to pay rent and save up for acting classes to become an actress before she used her degree. They all liked each other and liked Daya, they gave her each of their numbers and she gave them hers.

The break was over and they all went back to work, Daya could hear the male boss whom she forgot to ask the rest about, leave. She went to his room and was done with it by two thirty p.m. then she cleaned the rest of the living rooms then returned her uniform to Tom, who was supposed to clean all the maid uniforms, she then said bye to everyone and went home. She got home around five o clock then realized she hadn't turned on her phone all day. She saw five missed calls and a string of texts from Butch that read

"hey Daya, I have a date, what should I wear?" ₁: ₀₀ p.m.

"oh, shoot you are at work, ok call me when you get back." ₂: ₃₀ p.m.

"are you back yet? I honestly can't remember when you said you close." ₃: ₂₀ p.m.

"are you dead, like I remember you saying four o clock and it is four thirty now, caaaallll me." ₄: ₃₀ p.m.

Daya called him immediately and as soon as he answered,

he said "finally, where have you been woman",

she replied, "at the circus with Leonardo DI Caprio, we were farming",

"ha-ha, very funny"

"well when is your date boy"

"girl in about three hours and she lives in the other side of town so get dressed because I would be there to pick you in thirty minutes.".

Before she could ask why, he ended the call and before she knew it, he was at her door. She opened the door and asked smilingly "can I help you?", "yes and please let's go because we are running out of time" he said then dragged her into the car as soon as she locked her door. They got to his place which was slightly bigger than hers, then went to his room and he subconsciously started changing in front of her. They had reached a friendship level where this was considered ok, but she did notice and thought it was weird but not in a bad way, she liked it but not sexually. She was called out of thinking by Butch asking if he looked ok, she shook her head in disagreement explaining how he looked like Elvis and they both laughed as he tried something else. He tried about five outfits before they finally agreed on a button up light pink shirt which he didn't button all the way up with black jeans and black Vans, she told him he looked edgy and she would totally sleep with him if she was his date, so he was fine.

He got into his pyjamas and made them noodles, they ate it with beer as Butch bragged about how good of a cook he was and Daya told him to stick his head out of his ass because it was just noodles. He further explained how he only made noodles because he was going for a date and couldn't eat much or else he would have shown her his cooking skills. Daya asked about her and he replied "she is the black American girl and I told you I was speaking to sometime ago and you told me I would forget her in a week, well I didn't and I might actually like her", Daya responded saying she didn't remember telling him that but she did, she told him she was happy for him and she hopes it works out and he gets laid this night, he responded saying he was a gentleman and he would never sleep with someone on the first date even if they initiated it and they both laughed at his falsehood. He got dressed and at six forty-five they left, he dropped her off at her house and she told him to tell her the details tomorrow as he left to find his date.

She got in, called her family in Nigeria for about an hour then proceeded to check her social media, she thought about how she almost didn't like most of her friends and found them vain and fake but still kept up with them and met up a few times. She was bored and couldn't call Butch or text him because she knew he wouldn't use his phone on a date, so she decided to read a book, when she was done, she called one of her friends that she actually liked but they couldn't meet up because she lived in another state. They talked for an hour and updated each other on each of their lives, they talked about goals, art, music and everything Daya loved and she thought to herself that if she hadn't met Butch, Stephanie would have been her best friend because she was very intelligent, artistic, fun, sensible and weird just like her. At about nine o clock, they ended the call and Daya made herself a bowl of popcorn and watched television for a while then went to sleep at ten thirty p.m. because she was bored, tired and had work the next day.
