Through him all things were made
There’s not a single thing that exists that wasn’t made through the Son of God. Not a single planet. Not a single tree. Not a single person. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1: 1-5)
The Word is the Son of God. He existed before “in the beginning”. Before anything or anyone existed, he is. But how did everything come to be “through him”? We are told in Genesis that God spoke and everything was created. He spoke the Word. Through that Word, through his Son, creation happened.
That Word is still at work today. John tells us that what came through him was life. The Word animates all of life. When God told the animals to be fruitful and multiply, his Word went out and that life generating power has continued from that moment to this.
This applies even more to humans, because of all the things that were made only mankind had the breath of life breathed into him by God. Only mankind became a living soul. That soul begins to live at the moment of conception. Just because what we see around us and the people in our lives can have their existence explained by science, doesn’t mean at the root they weren’t made through the Word, though the Son of God
All things were made through him. He had a specific design in mind when they were made. Through our pride and arrogance, we tried to alter that design. We succeeded, in a way, but the consequences left a lasting impact on mankind. Death and darkness came into the world through Adam and Eve’s sin. But once again, in the fullness of time, God the Father acted through his Son. The Word became flesh and in doing so brought light and life to mankind. Therefore, just as we were made through him, the way back to the Father also came to be made through him. It is no coincidence that the Word through which we were created also became the Word made flesh through which we are restored to what we were originally created through him to be.
