Hero of the Pond

One day there swam a mighty brute

Who chewed up fish that were small and cute

His name was known to all pond-kind

As Monster, the fish devoid of mind

His reign went unchallenged for some time

Until something emerged from the slime

A thing to strike fear into Monster's heart

This abomination would play its part

With toes on its eyebrows and teeth on its back

Its every stroke would end in a loud crack

But despite its monstrous outward flair

A gentle soul rested inside there

Monster that day was quite proud of his menace

As he methodically practiced his grimace

A bubbling sound came from behind him

As the curious creature awaited his chagrin

"You are a freak, and that's all I will say"

Said Monster, who wished the thing would go away

The thing just blinked and thought for a while

"What is it about me that makes you not smile?"

"What is it?" he said "What is it, indeed!

You're ugly, you're large, you fill no apparent need!

You see, the carnage and horror I unleash

Stops the pond from getting too big, at least!"

"But you eat too many residents," said the thing

"It's no longer fair if you always win

I was born of the primordial slime,

To ensure you terrorise for the last time"

Monster refused to believe the thing's warning

And so, upon the dawning of the next morning

The thing had eaten Monster whole

And achieved its noble yet disturbing goal

The pond-folk rejoiced on this new day

Their constant worries had gone away

And so this thing became known to all

As Hero, the cause of Monster's fall
