Star sat by the window. She looked at the grey skies from the rain. It has been raining for two weeks. Not a chance for the sun to come out. She sighed twirling her hair.
"Ugh when will the sun come out?" She had nothing to do. She was very bored. She wanted to go check on Marco but he was busy. He had to finish up a project for school. Even though it's due next Friday, he likes to turn in his work early.
She couldn't take the boredom any longer so she went upstairs to Marco's room. She opened the door and poke her head in. She saw Marco on his laptop.
"Hey."
He looked at her. His eyes were exhausted. He must've not gotten any sleep. The fact that he stayed up until 5:00 am.
"Hey," he replied slowly.
"Still working on your project huh?"
"Yep. I just gotta do one more slide."
She rolled her eyes. He was so worked up with school that he barely had any time to enjoy himself. She could tell he was bored too. Then she got an idea.
"Hey why don't you take a break?"
"But I still need to fini-"
"Oh come one Marco! Take a break! You have a whole week of fun and you wanna spend it on work."
"I guess you're right."
She took his hand and walked him to his closet.
"Why'd you bring me here?"
She grabbed his hoodie and boots. You're probably wondering why Marco would wear boots. Star bought him some brown boots for when it rained or snowed. She set the boots at his feet and gave him the hoodie.
"Put this on. Me and you are going walking."
"But it's wet and cold outside."
She was obviously becoming annoyed with his moodiness. It's what happens when you don't sleep.
"Just do it." He closed the door as Star waited for him downstairs. He came back out with his jacket and boots.
"Ready?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
The walked down the slippery sidewalk. Star almost slipped when Marco grabbed her hand.
"I got you," he said smiling.
She smiled back. "Thanks!" They continued walking. There was no one else but the two. Everyone seemed to dislike the weather so much. Not for Star. Rainy days were just as enjoyable as sunny days. Grey clouds filled the sky not leaving any space. She looked at Marco who too was taking admiration in the sky. It was calming. The trees were leafless. Now that winter was coming, the trees would be nothing but sticks.
Marco spoke breaking the silence. "I like the sky today."
It was as if he read Star's mind. "Yeah they are beautiful."
They stopped at a pond. Star bent down to sit on the grass. She looked down at the water. It was transparent, revealing rocks sitting at the bottom. She picked one up and threw it across the pond. She picked up another one and handed it to Marco.
"I want you to make a wish and throw it across the pond. Let's do it at the same time and then we'll say what our wishes were."
At the same time they threw the rocks. They splashed water at them as they sank to the bottom.
"So what'd you wish for!"
"No you go first!"
"No you!"
"I insist."
"Ok. I wished that everyday would be a sunny day so me and you can spend lots of time together!" She knew that was her final wish.
"Ok. I wished that everyday we spend time with each other here at the pond for the rest of our lives."
She didn't smile. She didn't cry. Instead, she stared at him. Like he said something wrong. As if he had read her mind too. It was like their souls connected with each other.
"I... I'd like that too," she said still looking in his eyes.
He noticed her actions as he stared back. His eyes got wider each second. It was like her eyes made him fall in a trance. Almost hypnotizing him.
"Promise me."
"Promise you-" he grabbed her hand and placed it on his lap. "Promise me you and I won't ever stop spending time with each other."
"I promise."
He smiled nudging her neck gently resting his head on her shoulder. She did the same. They sat in this position for a while. Who cared if anyone saw? What mattered was that they truly care for each other. Even if it means visiting this pond for years to come.
"Besides, she spoke in, if I stopped seeing you I'd cry everyday."
"Yeah me too. If it weren't for your confidence I'd never be the person I am now. I'd still be insecure by now."
"What'd you mean? You still are insecure," she said giggling.
He frowned but smiled again. "I'm not that insecure."
"You'll always be my safe kid."
It was sunset. They watched the sun go down ready for the stars to shine. It was the best night ever. The skies covered in dark grey clouds. The stars shining behind them.
As for Star and Marco, well, they still sat there. Enjoying it. Marco noticed Star fell asleep in his lap so he picked her up and carried her home.
He laid her down. He covered her up and turned off the light. Before he left a kissed her forehead.
"You'll always be my Star."
He left closing the door behind him with a smile. Nothing was better without Star in his life. What a lucky guy he was to have a best friend like her...
