You get out of the truck, following the others. Warren heads straight for the bar, probably to drink away her sorrow. You don't blame her. Charlie's death is hard for everybody.
You have your own feelings to deal with. Of course, she could be fighting and surviving right now, you never know. One thing that you do know is that you have no idea if your mother is dead or alive. Or undead.
You decide to follow 10k, who is entering a shooting competition. It intrigues you, though you wouldn't enter it yourself. The only reason that you're still alive is because of the machete you hold lovingly, not because you know how to use a gun.
You watch as zombies are drawn closer, following the tinkling and chiming of an icecream truck that is slowly driving toward you.
You watch as 10k takes the zombies down, and soon it's just him and another girl battling for the win. But that's when another horde floods in.
You walk backwards then run away from the group and the Z's. Unfortunately, the zombies have caught your scent and won't let it go. They begin to snarl and stagger toward you. You can hear gunshots and see most of them go down.
There's just one left.
You rub your eyes. You're delusional; overthinking it.
Wait a minute.
No you're not.
You watch as your mother shuffles closer to you, arms reaching out to grab you. Her face is a light tint of green and splattered with blood; skin starting to peel off in places. Her teeth are yellow and her lips are black, stained with her own zombie blood. Those brown eyes that used to sparkle so much, light up when you spoke to her, were now dull and lifeless. Cloudy and grey, not beautiful anymore.
Even though it looks like it, you know that she isn't reaching to pull you close and hold you tight. She wants to rip you to shreds; devour your insides, just like the rest of them.
Tears stream down your face and you stand still, watching her slowly creep closer.
'M-Mom.'
She snarls in response - almost as if she can hear you.
'I - I didn't know. I thought that you were dead, so I left. I was afraid, M-Mom. I tried to return later, I tried to find you. When I couldn't, I thought that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance that you were still alive and fighting.'
'I'm sorry.'
She's two steps in front of you, dirty fingers touching your arms. Teeth snapping, trying to get a bite out of you. You close your eyes.
You don't care anymore.
You hear a gunshot and open your eyes. You see her crumpling to the ground in front of you, landing gracefully like a piece of paper. You look up to see 10k and Doc looking at you, concern displayed on their faces.
'You okay, Y/N?' 10k asks.
'That was close,' Doc adds.
'Y-yeah, I think so,' You reply, gazing down at the corpse in front of you.
'Why did you hesitate? Why didn't you kill it?' 10k blurts out.
Doc hits him lightly on the arm which makes him yelp and glare at Doc. In return, Doc puts a finger to his lips and nods in your direction.
You look up from the lifeless body in front of you and over at them.
'Because, 10k. That used to be my mother.'
