Part two yeehaw
After two weeks in the middle of nowhere, living off the berries and water from the creek and bushes nearby, you're getting sick of the same scenery.
The girl, who's name you found out is Maria, follows you without a word. You respect that, you admire that she respects you as a person and understand that you're trying to do what's best for you two.
She's chatty; complaining about her Snapchat streaks to no end, and at night you can hear her crying from your perch on the tree. However, she sleeps calmly through the night, whilst you stay up in a tall tree above, ready to find any danger. You haven't slept barely a wink since this whole thing started, but you won't let anything get the better of you.
You had fashioned daggers out of sharp and sharpened twigs, and converted pairs of scissors from your backpacks into weapons as well. Your textbooks had since long been dumped, but your water bottles and containers had continued to prove useful. Your clothes were dirty, but you bathed daily in the creek nearby.
Life seemed alright.
Until the horde came.
You didn't know it until it shook the earth of the forest, and you saw the figures start to emerge. You scurried down the tree, dragged a sleepy Maria up your tall tree, where you both huddled for warmth and strength. Maria was whimpering in fear, as she hadn't experienced anything like this.
But it wasn't the horde that was the trouble, that came and went fast. It was the people that arrived after.

You woke up, jumping from your short doze due to a nightmare. Maria was still safely asleep - as you walked past you checked for any bite marks. None to be seen. You walked to some bushes and began to pick berries, when you felt a light tingle on your arm. You looked down at it and the sight you saw made you drop your container in fright.
For on the back of your hand was two words. 'Stay Safe.' You hadn't written them, you wouldn't need words to remind yourself to do that when you thought of your safety daily.
'I see your soulmate is still alive, huh?'
You jumped at the voice, and saw Maria staring at your hand in wonder. You cleared your throat, and continued to pick berries from the shrubs.
'I suppose. Before all of this, I would have been happy. Now, it just seems like another cruel joke the universe has placed on us.'
Maria sighs, and helps to pick the light blue berries from the greenery.
'Be glad yours is still alive. I got a message last week saying, 'got bit. wish I could have met you.'
You stare at her curiously. 'You didn't say anything!'
She shrugs, placing some berries into the basket. 'Like you said, it doesn't matter anymore. We're all destined to die.'
You nod, agreeing with her statement. After all, there was no way that you could ever meet your soulmate.

When the people arrived, you didn't know what to think. When the old man emerged from behind a tree, you threw your handmade dagger at his skull. He ducked, then cursed loudly.
'What the hell? I'm not a zombie!'
You stared at him, not knowing what to think. You hadn't seen any other person since Robbie and Rosie. 'Put your, uh, hands up. Weapons on the ground.'
