Meezala was notified that John's new assault rifle was ready, also that a new weapon for him was in construction. She turned to Zakreever, and asked him if anything had turned up lately.
"Not yet," he said. He turned around and looked at the General's empty seat. "Nowadays he's always working on John," he commented. "It's like he doesn't care about us anymore."
"What are you, jealous?" Meezala sarcastically asked.
"I just think he should pay attention to the ones who are working all the time, instead of his damn robot."
"I'd like to see you face off with a target. We used to send large squadrons, and there would always be at least one casualty. John succeeded a mission by himself, and if he does die, General can just make another. He makes all our lives a lot easier."
"You aren't wrong, but it still bothers me. Whatever, I'm gonna go hit the sack."
"Good night." Meezala wrapped up her work, then headed off to her dorm. On the way out of the command center, she heard a loud beeping noise coming from Zakreever's desk. She rushed over, and saw that a new target had been found.
"General! A new target! He entered dimension 34,289, but I don't know what he's doing yet. Zakreever's in his room, I don't know what most of this stuff on his screen means."
"That's perfect timing," General proudly reported. "John is ready to go for another mission. I'll send Valeesa to wake up Zakreever."
With everyone in the command center, Zakreever read off the report.
"In that dimension, none of the people there can die, so this Markus Lenner guy has been torturing them. I guess he sees it as a stress reliever, but it's only a matter of time before he gets violent in dimension 1. Think you can handle a maniac, John?"
"It shouldn't be difficult for me," John replied. "He's just by himself, so I'll only need my pistol for this mission."
John entered the teleportation device, and was transported to dimension 34,289.
When he arrived, the dimension was a flat area with a tall tower. The target must be at the top, he thought. He entered the tower. All that was inside was a long spiral staircase. He looked up, and fired at the top. The shot echoed many times. A screen appeared in front of John, with the target on the monitor.
"Welcome, visitor," Markus said. "I'm so glad to have you. Try to get to the top, I'll give you a special prize if you do."
John started climbing the staircase. The dimension's people starting coming down towards him, firing. John shot back, but these enemies could not die. John fired at their hands to disarm them, then sprinted up and kicked off their arms.
John continued running up the stairs, but more and more enemies got in his way. Of course, they were only an annoyance to John. They didn't pose a threat, more like an obstacle. He shot at their arms once again, this time blowing them off with constant shooting.
Eventually, enemies started coming at him from behind and ahead. They jumped onto him, bringing him down. They attacked like animals, biting and scratching at John. This was how Markus has trained them through his torture. John's movement was completely restricted. He didn't know what to do.
"It's all right."
"General?"
"Yes. Just open your back."
"I can't move my arms to open it."
"You don't have to. Just try opening it."
John did what he was told, and "opened" his back. The officers in the command center were confused by the General's request, but when they saw John's back open up, they understood.
A bomb rose up from John's back, and exploded outward, doing no damage to John. His attackers disintegrated. He stood back up and continued up the stairs.
John reached the top. The roof was built like a maze.
"Try and find me!" Markus called out. John rushed through, reaching many dead ends, and turning around to run another direction. He ran back and forth, but there was a dead end every way he went.
"John," The General chimed in. "I'm looking at the maze from an outside perspective. Every time you reach a dead end, it shifts. You can't memorize the layout."
"Then, what do I do?"
"I guess you'll just keep going until you get lucky."
John ran around countless times. At one point, he reached another dead end, but then the wall behind him closed. He was trapped.
"Interesting." John heard a voice say that behind him. He turned around, and saw Markus with a grin on his face. "It was me who found you!" He then took a pistol out and shot. John dodged, and fired back. Markus jumped over him, landing behind him again.
The pattern continued. Markus shot from behind, John dodged, fired, and Markus jumped. It kept going for quite some time. Unexpectedly, Markus jumped and struck down instead of getting behind him. He brought John to the ground, and grounded his heel in.
Markus laughed maniacally as he constantly stomped on John. John tried to open his back again, but nothing came out.
"General! What happened to the explosive?"
"I only put one in you, that's all you could hold."
Markus kept laughing as John struggled. John had to think fast before Markus could damage him. The only thing he could think of was to try to fight back. He reached his arm behind his back, and grabbed Markus' foot. He pulled him down next to him, and quickly rose up. John pulled the target's arm behind their back and stomped on him. He pulled his arm with all his strength while pushing his body down. The target's arm was hanging on threads, before being torn completely off.
Markus roared in pain, and John moved to pull off his other arm. "Augh!" Markus cried. "Just who the hell are you!?"
"Who am I, you ask?" John responded. "I'm John Doe of dimensional patrol. You've violated inter-dimensional law. Your punishment is death!" John tore off his other arm, and Markus cried out again.
"Please," Markus begged. "Just arrest me, or something! I can't die in this dimension, and this pain is excruciating!"
"Then you know how they felt, now. You will suffer the same torture you put the people here through."
"No! Please! I'm sorry!"
John ignored his cry and rose his foot up, then stomped it hard onto his skull, causing his head to burst.
"Target eliminated. I'm ready to come back."
"Excellent work," the General said.
"That was gruesome, but good job," Zakreever added.
"Oh, it's over?" Meezala asked. "I stopped watching when he started pulling his arm. I'm too squeamish for that."
John was warped back to the control center. The General did a check up on him for damage.
"Looks like he cracked your back a little."
"Is it bad?"
"No, I should be able to fix this pretty easily. I'll put in another emergency explosive as well. Maybe I'll put one that explodes in front of you too. I'm putting you into sleep mode. I'll wake you up next time we need you."
