"ah . . . kaneki?" you whispered.

he looked at you, his eyes soft looking at ever. he looked the same as he did back then. but something was different, he had a white eyepatch on his right eye.

then flashbacks came rushing in from last night. the person, or maybe ghoul you saw had the mask covering his right eye as well.

you tried to push the thought back, only wanting to focus on now.

"umm, yes?" he questioned. he seemed slightly nervous.

"i'm l/n y/n, we used to go to the same university together." you explained with a smile.

"oh? did you take literature as well?" he asked kindly.

"yes, i did."

"that's nice," he said yet his voice was more toned down.

"what . . . what happened to you?" you pointed towards his eyepatch.

"oh, it was just a accident." he said he seemed nervous again. he placed his hand above the patch.

"i see, well i hope it gets better and heals," you gave him another smile before passing him.

"umm, thank you," he said.

you glanced behind to see him give you a smile in return.

you remember seeing those smiles when he was with hide. and how lovely they looked, how much you wished you could get to know him and make him feel good. yet it never happened.

but maybe this could be your second chance. a chance to become friends with him, be apart of his life.

you chose a spot next to the big window. you wanted to see all the people walking past, hoping to see something amusing.

you then took a look at the menu, finding out what you wanted. yet it got interrupted by the thoughts of kaneki. he was here, you found him. after all this time of wondering and worrying, he was alright.

it brought a grin to your lips. you then started finding what you wanted to have.

as soon as you were done chosing, kaneki came over.

"umm, what would you like l/n?" he asked with a gental tone. it made you feel so relaxed.

"i'll have espresso, please."

"no problem, coming right up," he said before taking the menu and turning back.

seeing him like this was different in many ways, but it was beautiful. he seemed so at peace, like he found a place he belonged.

as long as he was happy and safe, you were satisfied. yet many questions still lingered in your mind. all about why all the sudden did he disappear and never came back to school. if maybe that person last night you saw was possibly him.

there were still so many questions, and you wanted answers, but you also wanted to take it one step at a time.

and you first wanted to be friends with kaneki. then again that's always what you wanted.

as you were letting your thoughts comsue you, kaneki appeared.

"here you go l/n," he placed the cup down to the side of me.

"thank you," you picked up the cup and took a sip. "it's wonderful," you looked back at him.

"i'm glad." he started heading back.

"wait a minute kaneki," you all the sudden said.

"ah yes?" he turned back.

"why did you leave? i mean the university."

"oh, well things just came up. getting a job and being able to pay rent was more important."

"oh, i understand. i'm sorry for being in your business kaneki."

"it's alright."

as he continued walking back, you took another sip of the coffee. you let your mind wonder, spacing out.

"thanks again for your hard work today kaneki." the old man said.

"it's no problem." kaneki replied. "i'll be on break now."

"that's fine."

you over heard all of that. you wondered where he was headed off too. but you ignored it and just continued taking your coffee.

"umm, hey l/n?" someone said. you looked up to see kaneki once again.

"yes?"

"may i sit here with you? i really don't want to take up any other seats around here."

"oh no, it's fine."

"thank you, i appreciate it." he then took the a seat across from me. he then started reading a book he had brought over with him.

you saw it was another one if those mystery type of books. you were still surprised someone like him liked that kind of genre, but it was a nice interesting touch to him. you liked it. and it made you curious to try reading a book like that.
