I sat at the breakfast bar in the kitchen, staring at the cold coffee mug wrapped in my hands still trying to wrap my mind around my own thoughts. I heard the sound of feet padding towards me, I lifted my head up once the steps had stopped to see Steve leaning on the bar with his arms crossed opposite me, looking, almost studying me or admiring my features. I lifted a delicate piece of my wavy hair from my face "you lost something over here?" I croak out trying to sound normal.

"no, not at all, you look beautiful but also upset," Steve said with worry laced within his words

"I'm fine but thank you" I reply shyly shuffling in my stool, I lifted myself up and walked over to the sink, I didn't do what I was meant to be doing but instead just stared at the metal bowl blankly

"please let me know," I heard the faint Brooklyn accent plead, I jumped slightly, back into reality, and turned around

"of course I would" I breathe out heavily, I was frustrated at myself for not being happy at a time in my life such as this but instead I'm anxious and stressed. I watched as Steve started to walk over to me "there was news of Clint wanting to have a welcome gathering, he thought it would be pleasant for you, it's not a party or anything fancy at all but they're all in the living room if you want to join"

"uh yeah that sounds nice" I reply, hesitantly

"you don't have to ad" he reassures me whilst wrapping his arms around me and resting his chin on top of my head

"it's okay" I promised myself, I had no clue why I was feeling like this, in fact, I Knew why but not why I was feeling all of the negative emotions as heavily as I was, a delicate kiss was placed by Steve on top of my head.

"come on," he said sweetly slipping his hand into mine, leading me in the direction of the living room. The large door opened and they were all sitting there in casual clothes and drinks in their hands, a chorus of hoorays filled the room as I smiled and took an open seat. "when are you thinking of getting back to training?" Bruce asked in his low voice

"tomorrow" I answer shortly and make the promise to myself again, knowing I had to do it now

"Have you spoke to Callie?" Clint speaks up, followed by him taking a sip of his drink

"No actually not yet, I've been getting to know the complex" I reply, fiddling with my ring "I'm going to phone her" I barely speak into a near whisper, I lift myself up from the seat next to Wanda and leave the room whilst pulling my phone from the back pocket of my jeans. Callie's contact name lights up my phone screen and the ringing begins...

"okay I will... take care, goodnight" The conversation was short and sweet, but it was everything in a few words. I heard music coming from inside the room that I was standing outside of. I pulled the door open trying not to make a sound and on the other side they were all dancing with each other to a slow song on the radio, I watched for a bit getting slight amusement from the sight until my eyes skimmed over to Steve still sitting on the sofa alone in front of me "have you ever danced before?" I ask over the music, not too loudly so that the others could hear, Steve turned around and smiled once he saw me with a smile on my lips.

"dancing nowadays is different from dancing in the 40's Adeline" He answered in his signature tone, it made the small smile grow slightly

"would you like to dance?" I asked looking down and twiddling with my ring once again

"that sounds lovely" Steve replied getting up from his seat and taking his hand in mine as he had done before, I led us over to an empty space and put my arms loosely around the back of his warm neck as he tied his arms around my waist. We began moving carefully to the slow music, I had only danced with friends before and from what Steve told me, he has never danced before so it was one of the pure many firsts for us. "is this okay Adeline?" the blue-eyed boy asked sheepishly, I will never get tired of them eyes.

"it's... amazing" I looked up into the face that I adored, Steve kept everything bad at bay, all of the negative feelings and thoughts, he protects me from me.
