At that moment, a switch went off in his head and more things made sense. That's how she knew how to get to this place and that pavilion. It also explained why she wasn't scared or intimidated by his size.

"So she is coming here tonight?" Nathaniel asked.

Rew nodded, "Her and all the humans."

"How many humans are there?"

"About six hundred," Sander said with a smile.

"Six hundred!" Nathaniel exclaimed, "That's impossible!"

"There's about two hundred of us," Rew said, "All because of that one human." She walked back into the kitchen and put the pot of whatever on the stove again. She dished the substance into three bowls and gave one to Sander, who took it outside. She gave one to Nathaniel and sat down at a table.

"What do you do here?" Nathaniel asked as he sat down across from Rew.

Rew shrugged, "This place is a haven for all those who have been abused. We build houses and use these lands. Girl made sure we are taught to read and write. She also wanted us to know how to protect ourselves. She worked with humans to be more comfortable around us and taught us how to hold a human properly."

Nathaniel was absolutely astounded by this information. She did all of that?! That's impossible! He voiced his opinion and Rew laughed.

"That human is a lot stronger than you think," she said, "She's been through the most, and yet, she isn't timid like you would think."

"She is quite a character," Nathaniel admitted, "She surprised me with her... forwardness."

Rew chucked again, "She has that effect on people. I was surprised when she looked me in the eye and smiled."

"How did you two meet?" Nathaniel asked.

Rew sighed heavily and took a bit of her stew before starting, "My husband was an abusive alcoholic. He would do unimaginable things to me and then some. I was on the streets crying when she found me. She smiled warmly and offered me and my unborn child a place to stay. I followed her here. She introduced me to a man named Algor. He gave me food, clothing, and a warm place to sleep. She then taught me how to read and write. I've been here ever since."

Nathaniel was very impressed with this story, but one thing kept bugging him. "Do you pay tax to the King?"

Rew's aura darkened, "That greedy bastard doesn't deserve the people's taxes. But to answer your question, no. Since we are in the Middle Grounds, we are free from the King's rule."

"How do you make money then?"

"We don't have money," Rew explained, "I know it's hard to wrap your head around, but we don't have a currency, tax, or income. We take only what we need and everyone shares. There's not a need for money."

"This is really impressive," Nathaniel said, "Girl is quite impressive."

"Yes, but she always seems to be in trouble."

"What do you mean?"

"She was a slave for both human and giant kings. She has slave traders on her tail and better yet I heard there is a bounty hunter on her as well."

Nathaniel paled ever so slightly, "Bounty hunter?"

Rew nodded then scowled  "The things people will do for money."

Nathaniel's heat beat faster as he suddenly stood up. "Excuse me, but I have something I need to attend to."

Rew raised her eyebrow then gasped. She then glared at Nathaniel, "If you hurt one hair on her head, you will have eight hundred people on your tail. She has done no wrong."

Nathaniel got a little more pale and rushed out the door. He found the trail that led into the woods and sped down it until he saw the pavilion.

He sat down and ran a hand down his face.

He was so fucked...
