The crowd of giants became more and more excited as the humans came closer. Surprisingly everyone became very quiet.
Except for one person.
The human leading the rest of her kind...
Girl.
She sang loudly and proudly. Her voice echoed throughout the entire forest.
My friends, my friends!
We come not as foes
So release your troubles,
Release your woes
My sisters and my brothers,
My family made of love
May you be safe and happy
I pray to above.
Let us celebrate this bond
Let us dance, let us sing
Let us be merry
Let the forest ring!
Both giants and humans cheered with the conclusion of her song and the humans basically ran towards the giants in delight.
All the giants knelt to welcome the humans, even the children.
Feeling a bit awkward, Nathaniel did the same. He silently prayed that no human would come up to him.
A tug at his pant leg snapped him out of his own head. he looked down to see the small human child he saw at Girl's house.
"Hi Mister Nate!" the girl, whose name he's totally forgot, chirped, "It's me, Petunia!"
Nathaniel smiled. "Hello Petunia. How are you?"
"I'm so happy your here! Can you be my buddy for tonight? Pretty please!"
Nathaniel chuckled and nodded, "Alright, but you have to show me what to do. I've never done this before."
Petunia squealed excitedly "Yay! First, you have to help me get to the table."
"And how do I do that?"
"You gotta pick me up, silly!"
Nathaniel had to do a little backtrack. She wanted him to pick her up? Why would she want that?
Then he noticed that all the other giants had picked up and at least one human to guide them to the tables.
"I'm not very good at it," he confessed.
Petunia giggled, "It's okay! Just pretend your hand is the ground and I'll sit on it. Then you walk to the table and I'll hop off. Simple!"
Nathaniel huffed and reluctantly laid his hand flat for the small human child. "Climb on," he said with a small smile.
Petunia wobbly climbed on and sat down in the middle of his palm. "I'm ready!" she said with enthusiasm.
Nathaniel brought the girl up to his chest as carefully as he could. He felt the girl lean into him and he prayed that she wouldn't hear how hard his heart was beating.
Something changed in him...
Why was he so anxious about this?
What happened to the stone-cold, harsh facade he always had on?
What was wrong with him?! He should be here, doing this.
He made his way to the table and gently distributed Petunia.
"Aren't you gonna sit?" Petunia asked.
"I'll be right back," Nathaniel assured her, "I need to do something first."
"Oh, okay! I'll save you some food!"
Nathaniel gave her a small smile, "Thanks."
He walked away from the party and into the woods, not caring about venturing in the dark. He managed to find the path leading to the pavilion Girl showed him earlier. He went inside and flopped on the chair there.
"What the hell is wrong with me?"
"I don't know, you tell me," a voice said.
Nathaniel's head snapped up. "Who's there?"
A small figure appeared from the shadows. "Hello, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel tensed, "Hello, Girl."
"Are you okay?"
"What?"
"I asked if you were okay. I saw you leave and was worried about you."
This surprised Nathaniel. "Wh-what? Why would you be worried about me?"
Girl shrugged "It's my job to worry about everyone in this family. Moshe told me how much of a help you were today and I saw how gentle you were with Petunia. You would definitely be apart of this family if you wanted to be."
Nathaniel shook his head, "I was -am supposed to kill you. Why are you caring about me? You should be scared of me, run away."
Girl huffed and pinched the bridge of her nose, "I thought we already established that I'm not afraid of you."
"But why aren't you?!"
"Because I see you as a person and not a monster, idiot! Are you that close-minded to think that every human thinks giants as some huge scary monster? Fate above! Your skull is thicker than leather!"
Nathaniel was about to rebuttal when the words Girl said actually registered in his mind. "What?..."
"You heard me."
