Nathaniel was at a loss. He was so confused by this human's actions. "I don't understand..."
"I'm giving you a second chance," she said, "You can join this family and be free of the harshness of the outside world. You would be left to your own devices, but still would be welcome to join in any of the Family's events. I'm offering you a second chance at life."
"How can you just do that?! How can you offer me a second chance like I didn't almost take your life?"
"Because I'm a stubborn ass when it comes to helping people. Whether you like it or not, our doors are always open to those who need a new chance. Unlike most people, I usually don't hold grudges."
Nathaniel put his face in his hand and groaned, "Why can't you just hate me... it would be easier."
"Life's not easy, my friend. Come back to the party when you are ready, I know Petunia is waiting for you."
With that, Girl left Nathaniel alone, leaving him to ponder her offer.
Nathaniel's mind was in pure turmoil. Why would she give him a second chance?! What reason did she have to give him a chance at redemption? He was horrible to her!
Then his mind shifted to the giant village. He saw how hard they worked to make tonight special. He remembered how careful they were with humans.
Petunia...
He looked at the hand that held her.
He literally held that little girl's life in his hand.
This made his stomach twist and sink down to the ground.
She had put full trust in him. She had put her life in his hands.
That little girl wasn't afraid of him. She never screamed at the sight of him or fled from him. Instead, she rn up to him. She chose him to pick her up.
Maybe he wasn't the monster people said he was...
It was like a switch flipped in his mind.
Here he was treated like a person, not some killing machine. He helped because he was asked to. They never forced him to do anything. He was never robbed of anything.
They didn't need to rob him.
They were happy and content with what they had. They never asked for more than they needed.
Maybe that's what he needed.
Maybe he needed to have nothing to be happy and content with his life.
He abruptly stood up and (for the first time in a while) smiled.
"I don't have to be a monster," he said to himself. "I don't have to be a monster!"
With newfound energy, he practically jumped to the giant village. He walked up to the table, smiling like a fool, and sat down at his stop."
"There you are, Mr. Nate!" Petunia squealed, "I save you some food, see?!"
"Thank you, my dear," Nate beamed.
"I'm glad you finally decided to join us," a voice said from behind him.
He turned to see Rew carrying a pot of some sort of food. "Hello, Rew."
"Nathaniel." She placed the pot of food in the middle of the table. "Enjoy."
"Thank you, Miss Rew!" Petunia beamed.
Rew's faces softened, "No problem, sweetie."
Nathaniel smiled down at the human girl. He was content watching everyone have a good time with everyone else.
So this is what it feels like to have fun...
