Days had gone by since the lunch with the Luthors'. In some ways things had gotten better; the rest had taken a turn for the worse. Her mother sits in the kitchen staring at her with abhorrence. Her father flips his newspaper and takes a small sip of coffee. Darren discreetly flings food at her and Ms. Masion prepares breakfast.
"Kara, honey its time come and have breakfast." Ms. Masion yells up the stairs.
"Coming, Ms. Masion." A soft gentle voice calls from the stairs.
Petite footsteps bound down the stairs. She turns the corner in a bright yellow sundress although it was autumn. She smiles at the table her smile make the world light up a little more. She skips over to their father and kisses him and then their mother. Their mother's face softens whenever Kara was nearby.
Kara pulls out a chair and sits next to Lila. She squeezes her hand. It comforts Lila. That was the thing about Kara no matter how everyone else treated Lila, she was always kind. It was mostly hidden but it was still kind.
Lila smiles at Kara and pass her the syrup as Ms. Masion places a plate of French toast in front of her.
"Not so much carbohydrates Gardenia. She must uphold the family appearance." Their Mother snares at Ms. Masion.
"Yes of course. Mrs. Monroe." Ms. Masion says meekly.
Kara, who adores everyone in the house even Darren, speaks up. "Mom, its one piece of French toast, I think I will be okay. Don't be mean to Ms. Masion, please; I did ask for this."
Their mothers eyes flare a little before responding. Lila doesn't see their mother's anger towards Kara very often but it doesn't matter what Kara says the response will always be nice.
"Your right dear. I'm sorry for snapping Ms. Masion." She says she sorry but the tone suggest that the housekeeper would pay for it later. Mother begins to speak to Kara again. "How did I get such a smart child? Only eight and understands the world so much." Her voice is sweet and caring.
Kara smiles but says, "Two smart children, Mama. Lila is nine and in high school."
"Yes, two smart children." Mother says dryly with a small smile.
"Speaking of high school don't you have to get going Lila?" Father says quickly most likely just wanting the conversation to stop.
"Yes, Father." Lila says and then gets up to leave, food falls from her lap. Mother is obviously appalled but says nothing. Darren laughs which earns him a smack on the back of his head. His laughing stops.
"Sorry, Dad." He says simply.
Their mother leaves as she always does whenever she hears Darren say dad. She brushes past Ms. Masion knocking her down. Darren runs to help his mother up only for her to refuse his help.
Lila leaves for school without saying a word.
School goes by fairly quick. She minds her business. She ignores the kids that pick on her for being a Luthor Charity Case. She avoids the principal and she tries her best to make it through Mr. Rubemal class.
His was her next class and she had to walk through the courtyard where the bullies that picked on Alexander her first day here would be waiting. They had started to pick on her now that Alexander would sometimes pay attention to her. She could go a different route but this was the fast way and she would get a chance to see Alexander before class. She took a deep breath and headed to class.
The bullies were not in the courtyard today. A relief for her because she knew Alexander waited for her sometimes; although, he never would say. She made her way in to the hall expecting to see him. He wasn't there.
She knew he wasn't even near; she couldn't sense him. Worry poured over her. Had he been checked out earlier? Had he switched classes? Did he have a run in with those bullies? So many questions ran through her mind that she could barely focus as she took her seat in Mr. Rubemal class.
Mr. Rubemal voice shrill voice goes through the lesson. Something strange is going on. Lila begins to hear faint raised voices and smells something weird. Then the alarm rings.
"FIRE!" Nathan shouts. The class scrambles to get up and head for the door.
"Calm down students it may be a drill." Mr. Rubemal shouts, his voice cracking. There were no scheduled drills today; Lila hears him think. There defiantly was a fire that was the smell Lila sensed but it was mixed with weird chemicals. All she could think was if Alexander was okay. She gets up and follows the class to the designated drill area.
The firefighters have already begun responding as the students head outside. They students line up as the teachers make sure that they are accountable for. Lila looks over to Mr. Cartwrights class and almost cries as she see that Alexander is safe. Why she cared so much was beyond her. Students are leaving their teachers and going to their friends so she runs up to him. He walks closer to her.
He knew I was okay Lila thinks to herself. Alexander hugs her. She is taken aback.
"Where were you?" she ask him anger seeping through her.
"I had to take care of something before class. I'm sorry I couldn't wait." Alexander says simply.
"Has anyone seen Eric Chambers, Liam Anthony, and Owen Haywood?" Principal Telston yells to the crowd.
"We have three people in the building!"!a firefighter yells to Principal Telston. "My guys are in there getting them out." The fire smells like it is getting worse. Then a large part of the building collapses and Lila hears the firefights yelling. "GET THEM OUT OF THERE YOU DONT HAVE MUCH TIME!"
She turns to Alexander barely controlling her voice and demands to know. "What did you do?"
