The way he looks at her, she feels like he notices her tears. She cannot worry about that now. All she can do is get through the next few hours and try not to disappoint her parents further.
Principal Telston shows up at the threshold and beckons for her family to come in her office.
"Stay here Lila." Her father states as he begins to walk towards the door. He looks at Alexanders father and says "Mr. Luthor, I wish I could say it is good to see you outside of work but under the circumstances. Well I'm sorry, sir."
Her mother who also works for Luthor corps respectively starts to apologize. "Please, sir, I hope you can excuse our daughter; I'm sure she didn't realize it was your son whom she was trying to get in trouble, sir." She looks at Lila with disgust that surprises even Principal Telston. "It won't happen again sir."
Mr. Luthor looks at Alexander and tells him to sit. He then proceeds to lead the Monroes into Principal Telston's office. There is a horrid look on her face as she apprehends the fact that he intends to attend this meeting as well.
"Mr. Luthor only the parents or benefactor of Lila may attend this meeting." She speaks sternly.
Mr. Luthor looks at Principal Telston and laughs. "I am the sole benefactor of Miss Monroe. If you read the student records before attending these meetings you would know that Ms. Telston." He then shuffles her parents into the office and closes the door behind them.
Lila looks at Alexander and starts to ask him a question but is cut off before she can.
"Why were you crying?" Alexander asks her.
"Crying?" She tries to pretend that she didnt know what he is referring to.
"Lila, why were you crying when we came out? I saw your tears. Do not lie." Alexander's voice is firm. She can tell that he will one day be a man that will command reverence.
"My feelings were hurt." She simply states this without looking at him, without looking up from her fingers twiddling in her lap, without emotion as if she is used to having her feelings hurt. The truth is no matter how many times her parents expressed their distaste for her it still hurt. She is still emotional. No one really understands they just see a privileged girl who is gifted with the world.
"Why?" He asks his voice having a distinct sound of anguish making Lila look at him. He probably will expect her to ask what he means by why; she won't because she knows. He means why are her feelings hurt with parents that seem atrocious. He is possibly right and it is ridiculous; nevertheless, she still hopes. He wants to know why.
"Maybe I still have hope that one day they will feel differently. Maybe one day they will show that they care. May one day they will love me. Maybe it's those thoughts that continually leave me vulnerable." She has a sad little smile. How can a boy only a few years older than her have her opening up to him this way? There is obviously something different about him that she does not quite understand.
"Are you sure youre twelve?" He asks with a breathy laugh.
She tilts her head sideways; her hair resembles a poodle. "I'm nine." She says with a smile.
"Nine?" He smile fades. Before she responds the office door opens and her parents come rushing out with Mr. Luthor trailing closely.
