"What the heck? Where are we?" I said, the cavern had disappeared replaced by a corridor that stretched from left to right. There were torches hanging on the walls guttered in iron scones. It smelled like an old tomb. On Hazel's shoulder the farting weasel barked angrily.
"Yes, I know, it's an illusion." Hazel said.
I pounded on the wall, it seemed pretty solid to me. "Pretty solid for an illusion."
Pasiphae laughed. Her voice sounded far away, and faint, like I was underwater and she was above me. "Is it an illusion, my dear Hazel, or something more? Don't you see, the boy is right, how do you not know I created this?"
Hazel paused suddenly, she was in deep thought. "The Labyrinth," she said suddenly. "She's remaking the Labyrinth."
"What now?" I pulled out a ball-peen hammer from my magic tool belt, then tapped the wall, testing it, I turned and frowned at her. "I thought the Labyrinth collapsed during the battle of Camp Half-Blood--like, it was connected to Daedalus's life force or something, then he died."
Pasiphae chuckled. "Ah, but I'm still alive. You credit Daedalus with all the maze's secrets? I breathed magic life into his Labyrinth. Daedalus was nothing compared to me--the immortal sorceress, daughter of Helios, sister of Circe! Now the Labyrinth will be my domain."
"It's an illusion, we just have to break through." Hazel insisted.
Even as she said it, the walls seemed to grow more solid.
"Too late, too late," Pasiphae crooned. "The maze is already awake. It will spread under the skin of the earth once more while your mortal world is leveled. You demigods. . .you so called heroes. . .will wander its corridors, dying slowly of thirst and hunger, fear and misery. Or perhaps, if I am feeling merciful, you will die quickly, in great pain!"
Hole opened up in the floor beneath Hazel's feet. She grabbed me and pushed me aside as a row of hot spikes shot upward, impaling the ceiling.
The sorceress laughed, her voice echoing down the corridor. "Where are you going, little sorceress? Running from an illusion?"
None of us answered, Hazel pulled me down a side corridor, leaped over a trip wire, then stumbled to a halt in front of a pit twenty feet across. "How deep is that?" I asked, heart pounding, gasping for air. My pants leg was ripped where one of the spikes grazed me.
"Eight minutes now." said Pasiphae's taunting voice. "Id' love to se you survive, truly. That would prove you worthy sacrifice to Gaea in Athens. But then, of course, we wouldn't need your friends in the elevator."
Hazel and I had been running around, turning left and right. Not sure of where to go, I had a feeling Hazel's underground mojo wasn't working right now and that she was just taking a chance.
"Seven minutes now! If only we had more time! I'd love to see you suffer."
"Leo we're going to jump." said Hazel.
"What? Are you nuts? I'm not sure if I can trust your--"
"It's not as far as it looks! Just go!" She grabbed my hand and we launched ourselves across the pit. Oh, this is one of the worst ways to die, I might end up being--" We landed, and Hazel turned around, I turned to see what she was looking at, to see only a three inch crack in the floor, there wasn't a pit at all.
